Even though Hatton won, Paulie nearly knocked him out!

I think it was a bad stoppage from the ref
What little credibility you had just went out of the window.Comment

That's his most effective punch IMO...caught Mayweather a few times wit it. I've sparred with a few kids who've tried to emulate it and I can say it's hard to defend sometimes because of the angle it comes from. You think you're slipping the jab, and you get hit with it. but after a while you can see it coming..Comment

Hatton is still a flawed fighter. Paulie nearly knocked him out in the first round and once in another round. If Hatton didn't hold so much Paulie would have been able to bust up that eye twice as bad and probably would have been able to stop Hatton. As it was he nearly got the stoppage. That right hand ****ed Hatton up bad.
Still, I think that Hatton is now number four on the P4P list. Maybe three with this win. If McGirt didn't stop it so prematurely though, Paulie still had a chance to catch Hatton coming in and get a TKO. He was starting to get caught on the way in, and even Paulie with no power could have cracked Hatton's chin with one of those solid check hooks.
I think the new Hatton could possibly beat Mayweather though. As long as they fought at 140 of course.Comment

Hatton's chin wouldn't have been able to hold up under Paulie's straight right. Hatton has one of the worst chin's in boxing. Did you see him get knocked out by Mayweather? He even nearly got knocked out by Lazcano.
Paulie should have won tonight, and if it wasn't for that ref and McGirt he would have done a number on Hatton.
Still, I think Hatton now sits behind Pac and Calzaghe as the best P4P fighter in the world.Comment

TBH, I didn't have much between them following the sixth. If anything the alarm bells seemed to be faintly ringing as Malignaggi's jab was hitting home with consumate ease in that last round. Ricky looked a bit flustered. He wasn't dominating the inside battle as I thought he would and those wild hooks were appearing more frequently.
Under Billy Graham this situaton could have escalated further, but - thankfully - Floyd Sr. got a grip of Ricky and instructed him to build from the jab and open up the space between them a little. From that point on Malignaggi was doomed.
I feel sorry for the kid. He's a pretty good technician with guts in spades. Such a pity that his hands have all the substance of dessicated plaster. With a bit more power he'd be a genuine force to be reckoned with. As things stand his career at the very top may well be over. I certainly don't think he has anything to be ashamed of.
As for McGirt throwing in the towel - I'm in two minds. I hear Paulie's argument, but on the other hand he was in an unwinnable situation (needing a KO that he could never deliver) taking an increasing amount of punishment. Paulie's been in a few wars lately. If he is sure he wants to continue fighting at this level, McGirt may well have saved him for another day when the odds are a little less stacked against him.
As for Hatton. A good win after questions have been raised about whether he's past it - but I wouldn't be breaking out the champagne and caviar just yet. Yes, he didn't gas as he has done in previous bouts. But then he wasn't fighting someone capable of putting him under any real pressure. Let's be honest - getting hit hard takes as much out of you as movement and punching. So if you aren't being hit hard you're going to feel that bit fresher.
Where does he go from here? If, as I suspect, Hatton's looking to get out after one final pay day then I can't see much further than Oscar or Manny. Prime vs Prime I'd take Oscar in a gruelling scrap. Today perhaps Ricky has the edge. Reason suggests Manny is too small, but you never know. Aside from those two I can't see any other candidates with sufficient earning power for Ricky. Perhaps Cotto.Comment
