Ok so I am a little late in posting this but I am never online during the weekends. My schedule and my family(the ole ball and chain three little kids 6,4 and 2 year olds) don’t allow me to spend time posting. I watched the Taylor vs lacy fight with some expectations. I guess they were both game but Lacy definitely proved not to be the fighter he once was. Either it was the terrible beating he took at the hands to Joe Calzaghe or the injury to his left shoulder but the combination of his lack of talent and Jermaine’s skills made this a very lopsided bout. First let me say Jermaine looked very good for his first fight in over 9 months I think they said it was a 271 day layoff to be exact. He seemed to want to establish his jab and the use of his left hand early on. Now all be praise to the lord Lacy is infact a punching bag with arms at this point as was there for JT to hit all night long. I will say this Lacy was trying very hard. He was lunging in and throw hard right hands over the top of Jermaine’s jab. He landed one of those hard rights though it was a shot off the shoulder and then bounced off the side of Jermaine’s head that landed Jermaine on his pants. The reff ultimately ruled it to be a slip.
With the 271 day layoff the 2 consecutive losses to Kelly Pavlik one of them being by dramatic knockout and the fact that he was moving up in weight and fighting a hard hitting iron chinned guy in Lacy, Jermaine looked good all in all. I give him a B rating for the fight. He was using 4 and 5 punch combo’s/ Ripping shots to the body and popping his jab throwing 2 and 3 at a time. He was moving well and except for a few times that I noticed he was not going straight back like he did in the Pavlik fights. He kept his back side of the ropes and his a$$ out of the corners thus not having to absorb and unnecessary punishment. He fought well in the middle of the ring. Hs punches looked sharp and crisp and accurate. He out landed his opponent by over a 3 to 1 margin . Taylor landed 244 total punches to Lacy only landing 75. Taylor held Lacy to a 17% connect percentage while landing 48%. End result- The judges score it 119-109, 118-110 and 119-109, all for the winner by unanimous decision, Jermain "Bad Intentions" Taylor.
So I guess his moving back and to the side was working for him all night. He managed to neutralize Lacy’s right hand. Slipping it causing Lacy to over shoot the punch all night. Even the one he landed in the 5th round was not a clean punch.
Overall he looked good and the work he got in against a very game opponent in Jeff was just what Jermaine needed as a confidence booster. His movement and defense looked improved. His ability to establish he key weapon early on was evident in his popping his jab all night long. The fact he the combinations not just jab and straight right hands was awesome. He had his jab, straight right uppercut and body shots all working for him by the middle of the 6th round. He looked ready to move on and leave those two losses to Pavlik in his rear view. I would love to see Jermaine in there against another hard puncher in Edison Miranda. Miranda fits the profile of what Jermaine is working on a straight forward fighter with a hard punch who is relatively easy to hit. I think one more fight like that for Jermaine and he is ready for the Kessler’s and other top fighters at 168….Lefty
