Well, it was actually more that he beat Hopkins who neither Tarver or Johnson could beat that made him one of this era's best fighters. Jones was just a name at the end of the career. A fight to go out looking good on. I don't think anyone really believes that it was the fight that made him great, because it wasn't. Beating Kessler, Hopkins, Eubanks etc etc is what made him a great fighter and I think most people recognise that, well, apart from you maybe.

He did not get to be recognised as a great fighter through his Jones win. He is recognised as a great fighter by staying undefeated throughout a forty-plus fighting career, unifying a weight division, having a record number of title defenses and moving up in weight to beat the the Ring LHW champion and legendary B-Hop, who of course went on the give a severe beat-down to the great young MW champ in his very next fight. It was that, and not the Jones fight that made people realise he is a fantastic fighter.

He even half admits that Jones is slower now which is better for him, and he wants to make it his last fight so he can retire undefeated. Not true. Calslappy is infamous for pulling out of fights and put of Glen Johnson three times. Them fights were there to be made but Joe didn't even have tune ups in states for fear of getting beats.Ricky too the risk and made it happen. Joe didn't want any part of it. He only got brave when they were old: FACT! He also tried pulling out of Lacy fight with broken hand but in this instance was forced to go ahead with it by FW and his dad. RJJ had the p4p status. B Hop was recognised. It was Joe's job to chase them but I never remember himever mentioing them, never mind calling them out. Watch his fights, he was a puffter!
