America is not about to drop off the world boxing map, but may have to get used to a boxing world that is a little bit different than what has gone before.
The USA is currently witnessing the last months of what was an exceptional generation of boxers. James Toney, Roy Jones, Bernard Hopkins, Floyd Mayweather, Shane Mosley, Winky Wright, Oscar De La Hoya....great names, and it does not loook like they are going to be replaced with a new generation in anything like as great numbers.
There are a lot of good young American boxers though, the problem is that Kelly Pavlik, Chad Dawson, Andre Berto and Timothey Bradley are all at the beginning of their careers and it is not clear if they will go on to anything like the same success. In all likelihood some will and some won't, but there'll be other guys coming along too, so American boxing will survive a while longer yet.
They are in a better position than the UK at least, when Calzaghe and Hatton are gone, and once David Haye has been KOd by a heavyweight, the cupboard will definitely start to look a bit bare. I'm going to be supporting Fillipino boxers from now on, and Mikkel Kessler too of course.
