The most athletic fighter ever, perhaps the fastest ever at the higher weights. Not nearly perfect, he was fundamentally flawed.

theres only 1 fighter who represents the word perfection.

      floyd mayweather jr.

      hes the best.

in terms of completeness i rate hagler, srl and sweet pea whitaker above floyd when you look at opposition faced...floyd still has time to surpass them though...

maybe physically....perfect fighters don't have glass jaws and no fundamental ability.

Nope, not IMO. He was ridiculously fast, but he relied on his athletic ability too much. Look what happened when he slowed down. His fundamentals/technical skill wasn't good enough for him to be considered perfect.

Floyd won't surpass those in opposition faced, mainly because he seems to be selective on who he fights and secondly there was a higher level of opposition during Hagler/Leonard/Whitakers time. Beating Pacman/Mosley/Cotto is not nearly as impressive as beating Benitez/Hearns/Duran etc.

Bert Sugar says there are a few fighters who have ever come along that he would consider "brilliant". Having to do with just amazing unmatched skill level. There are only 3 I believe that he said were "brilliant". Ray Robinson, Ali, and Henry Armstrong. But at one time he believed that Roy Jones could be the next. That says a lot.

I'm a bit unsure of Bert Sugar's ratings of boxers because when he published his Top 50 ATGs he had Leonard at #25 and Hagler about #48. How the hell is Ray Leonard at #25???

to the people that say mayweather is a better fighter than prime roy, that's just ******
tho mayweather was a better all-round fighter, mayweather did'nt have the speed, the power, nor the reflexes roy had, mayweather is a ****in featherweight and even there he was'nt as fast as roy in lightheavyweight so wtf?, roy was lightning in his prime during the super-middle weight era, no fighter flurried with that fast, with that much power

so the answer to the thread starters question and to the jones haters
no jones is'nt the most perfect fighter, and yes floyd mayweather is a more perfect fighter
but roy had one thing that put him above every other fighter, reflexes(which IS the most important), the unbelieavable sort, lets see floyd do what jones did with leaping uppercuts and leading right hands like jones, oh wait we did see it, against judah i believe, and floyd even got knocked down tryin to do that, was'nt counted cuz of the dumbass ref though

I agree Bert is not the best boxing expert and his lists can sometimes make you scratch your head. However when it comes to just evaluating talent like this, I tend to respect his opinion. You're right though his top 100 is not great.
