He was also much more focused on landing single accurate power shots than combinations, shots that you don't get up from. You're correct that he mixed up his shots well, but they usually came one or two at a time.
I agree that he didn't throw a lot of shots in his combos, they were usually two shot combos (often the double left hook), or three shots.

For the most part though, I don't think he took as much punishment (at least in his younger years) as you say. He took some, but I don't remember too many fights where I went away thinking "damn, he took a beating but outlasted him". He took some shots but I usually thought once he got the motor going, his pressure and subtle skills were too much for the opponents. Except for the Laporte fight, which I actually had even. Never saw the Lockridge fight though.

I guess "crude" is different in your definition than mine. When I think of crude, I think of guys like Ponce, Cuevas, Valero, and to a lesser extent, Margarito. They wing a lot of shots and leave themselves open too often.

Yes, I think our definitions differ a bit. You're correct that he was not at all one to wing shots, and I wasn't questioning his technique in regard to offense - he needed to be accurate and pick his shots because his hand speed was average at best. He did have a subtle defense but as I said, I think it was more a product of infighting and an overwhelming assault than any real focus on mastering and applying the techniques. He had the bare basics and used them effectively, but with such a great chin it's obvious to anyone that he was best served by honing his offense exclusively.

Take away 60 cab drivers from Chavez record... who the fk did he beat?

                  Randall?

                  Tzu?

                  DLH?

                  Taylor I?

Chavez quit in the RING 2X. Tito "retired."

Chavez would not last 6 minutes in a 50 foot ring with Tito.

Julio Cesar Chavez faced 3 of Puerto rico's top 20 fighters of all time, Juan La Porte, Edwin Rosario, and Hector Camacho. He clearly beat all three of them, so if you think he never beat anyone that says a lot about Puerto Rican boxing.

EDIT: It says a lot about what you know about Puerto Rican boxing, not Puerto Rican Boxing itself it's a lot more accomplished than you are making it seem by dismissing some all time greats as "bums".
