Joe Louis 199 v. Billy Conn 169 - first fight

Damn, and here in todays time we talk about 12 pound weight issue, lol.

I was watching "12 greatest rounds by Freddie Pacheco" and was amazed at the weight differnce and to think if Conn would have not slugged with Louis, Conn may have won there first fight.

Big weight differences were much more regular in those days.

Conn put in a great performance before getting ****y.

Conn fought a brilliant fight the first time. The second fight showed what a size mis-match it really was, Conn had slowed down by then.

Conn overcommitted or he would have won the first fight. He wanted to win definitively, by stoppage, which brought about his undoing.

Spinks-Holmes comes close enough in my opinion. Holmes was undefeated after all, but in terms of that invincible aura yes, Louis and Tyson were in a different class (or hyped more at least). Charles would have accomplished the feat if he had been given a shot at the LHW title before moving up.

Coming into the fight, Conn had only 13 KOs in 59 wins, and he still went for the KO against a guy who was 30lbs heavier

That would be like Malignaggi trying to KO Bernard Hopkins.

It's debatable whether it was more Holmes failing to take the threat seriously or on the downslide (and if so how much). Holmes fought pretty well during his comeback in the 90s if you recall. The second fight was pretty questionable, but the first fight I think was close enough that you can't criticize the decision overmuch. At the very least Spinks put on his best performance, not making the mistake that Conn did.
