Im not comparing Titos chin to Calzaghes at all.......im saying that Roy obviously had enough conviction behind his shots to put a 5 time world champion on his ass......twice.
also i hope your not banking on another Manfredo moment because i highly doubt the ref would do that in this fight.....especially with a world class fighter like Jones.
Banking on a Manfredo moment? No, I'm actually (officially) predicting a Calzaghe UD to be the most likely outcome by far. Enough about that:
Tito Trinidad is smaller framed than Roy, not necessarily shorter. It shows in his reach, to a small extent, you'd probably also find that Roy wears maybe a 10 1/2 shoe or bigger, and Tito maybe a 9 1/2? I'm 6'2", and wear a size 13, a buddy of mine is 6'3" and wears a 10 1/2, and I could break him in two, even though we're roughly the same weight. That's what I mean by bigger. Roy could've never made Welterweight with his frame, barely made light middle as a kid, I think, though I'm not even positive about this. And with a larger frame, comes strength and durability.
And it's because of this size difference, as well as an accumulation of punches that Tito ended up on his shorts a couple times during that fight. Roy was landing on Tito from nearly every angle imaginable, lead rights, outside hooks, uppercuts, you name it he landed it, but I'll say again...very few of his punches had any real steam on them. And there's nothing wrong with that, I'd probably have done the same were I, he. I'm just saying that when he fights Calzaghe he's going to have to up his work rate to Calzaghe's level just to have a solid chance at a victory, or he's going to have to jump Joe's ass early, before he hits his stride, and try his damnedest to take him out. The problem with getting his work rate up that high is that he'll get gassed, and probably hurt badly or TKO'd late. The problem with jumping Joe early and going for a KO early is basically the same...if he burns up that kind of energy early, he's going to gas late and be in serious trouble.
I have massive doubt as to whether Roy can achieve the level of conditioning he'll need against Zaggs to win a UD. Not saying it's impossible, just that I think it's highly unlikely, and that's his only real problem coming into his fight. If it weren't for that, I'd say that this fight could be a coin toss with Roy the favorite by maybe 10% or more. Without that level of conditioning, he's a huge underdog to win, and even a slight underdog to finish on his feet, in my book.
As for Tito's skill level...about that we're just going to have to disagree. Don't get me wrong, pal, I enjoyed watching Tito fight...almost always exciting, but I never had any illusion about his level of skill. He could be easily outboxed, but he carried the great equalizer in both hands, and just enough skill and handspeed to make sure he'd connect with enough solid punches to introduce his opponents to the canvas. Failing that, he could at least keep them afraid of getting within reach. You've got to remember, he almost never had to outbox anyone. He has over 40 fights, and I think 35 KO's. that's well over 80% KO's. Most hard punching heavyweights don't boast that sort of KO ratio, and that's why Tito has always been such a great draw. That, and his home country fan base.
stickman is kind of right...Roy is going to need to throw enough punches to win. Will he have the energy to do it. I say yes, but the verdict is obviously still out...
heres one thing I figure, being that Roy Jones Jr. is one of the smartest fighters of all time...don't you think he knows that hes going to have to throw alot of punches? I doubt Roy would even take the fight if he thought he couldn't win it. So I expect Roy to be tremendous shape come November 8th. This isn't a 39 year old flabby out of shape fighter were talking about, Roy stays in great shape.
I hope he turns back the clock though, but he ain't the same fighter he once was and Calzaghe is pretty much at his peak. This fight needed to happen years ago.

thats where i disagree......i think if Roy comes in there with the same arsenal he came in with in the Tito fight Joes not going to have a chance to build his usual workrate.
like Reed mentioned earlier.......with Joe getting countered back and hit so often he's not going to be able to get off like he usually does. i'm not sure if you've ever boxed before but speaking from experience its true......if your getting hit or countered you have to adjust your game plan or get stopped.
and I think Roy has the arsenal and ability to do just that.
Oh for God's sake. Jones is shot. Calzaghe is going to beat him. Thats it.
He is still faster and stronger than his next opponent. RJJ by UD or late KO. JC is aged and going downhill as well. A hungry RJJ is all we need to see the end of JC.
