Vargas ALWAYS came forward no matter who he fought.
Vargas was hurt badly twice in round 1 of his fight with Tito and came back and turned the table on Trinidad.
So much so that Trinidad had to low blow Vargas NUMEROUS times(It seems this is something peurto rican fighter tend to do when you get the best of them i.e Cotto) and lets not forget Vargas floored Tito.
Vargas is the ultimate warrior.
If you wanted to built the ultimate warrior or soldier clone Fernando's heart and put it in every soldier or warrior.
To me a true measure of a fighter...the defining quality in my opinion is how he responds when he is hurt
I have always said Tito was overrated because when he gets in trouble he folds.
Same with Mike Tyson.

actually u say that but vargas came back and low blowed tito numorous times 2. and tito didnt take no 2 or 3 min he wanted to keep fighting right then. so u cant use that as an excuse and tito got hit and hit and came back to knock vargas out no excuses tito dominated vargas truth hurts.

actually dont say every cotto fan because i hate vargas always have Im a big time cotto fan and i picked vargas on this but still cotto showed tremendous heart picking to fight marg when no one wanted 2 and giving his all .

Is this a joke or what? Anyone who has said Cotto or "both" should kill themselves right now. Let's compare the two performances in detail:

-Vargas got knocked down TWICE in the first round and came back to put Tito on his ass on round 4 and give him what Tito considered his toughest fight, and definitely the one in which he received the most punishment
-Cotto was winning the first half of the fight and then got destroyed in the second half.

-Vargas could've used his superior boxing ability to beat Tito but decided to go toe-to-toe with the guy billed the harder puncher
-Cotto was billed the harder puncher and his performance blurred the line between "boxing" and "running"

-Vargas got knocked down twice by devastating shots that should've made the ref stop the fight, and he got up immediately after each hit.
-After taking a knee for his first knockdown, Cotto retreated without throwing one punch until the ring did not allow him to, at which point he intentionally went to the floor to escape punishment

Cotto may have been smarter in that he tried to win while avoiding punishment, and took a knee to secure his health, but this topic is not "who demonstrated more intelligence by trying to prevent serious injuries to himself while losing a fight", the topic is who showed more heart, and in this department there is no comparison.

Also, the 2000 version of Vargas DESTROYS any version of Cotto. This guy was putting the hurt on Tito and Oscar in many stages of their fights, and beat two guys with MUCH more boxing ability than Cotto in Winky and Quartey. Did I mention he beat them both before turning 22?

id say ur right on some points but the winky fight they gave it to him cause i had winky winning that fight. Plus Winky back then isn't the same fighter than when he fought Tito in 2004 different winkys im pretty sure if tito woulda fought winky back then he woulda murdered him 2.
