Speaking of Marciano. Was he an ATG? If Louis wasn't an ATG then Marciano wasn't either since he didn't beat any other ATG's.

With a definition like the one you just mentioned such cases could be made for several fighters normally considered ATG's.

I guess then, that it comes down to having 'boxing ability beyond imaginable'. With that being the case, then I can very well see Joe Calzaghe fit that ability. Noone, and I mean noone, in history has a style and ability comparable to Joe Calzaghe. Hence Joe's an ATG.

Joe Louis beat that German guy in one round in HW title now that is something, Louis was boxing in what some experts called a golden age of boxing unlike Calzaghe SMW era. Marciano beat old Louis and Archie Moore Jersey Joe Walcott Roland LaStarza they were very decent fighters and plus you are ignoring the fact Marciano use to go 15 rounds.

Sam Solomon(spelling) has a very awkward fighting style doesn’t make him anything special. Example Mayweather has one of the greatest defence, Ali footwork,Holmes Jab, Maricano Power and so on. What does Calzaghe have rapid combos a lot of boxiers can easily do that

When he retires after RJJ after beating names such as Kessler(unproven) Eubank(Weight drained) and Lacy(The young mike Tyson) will his name be up there with the likes as Ali Duran Leonard Tunney Dempsey Marciano Robinson JCC Roy Jones Holmes Louis and many more. Is he that good??

I voted no, even though he is a very good fighter. He is a great fighter for his era, but not all time great.

What impresses Greg the most about Joe, is his ability to consistently get his way in a fight. Joe does have a good ability to adjust in there. His punching power is incredible and very underrated. His punch to Hopkins that landed low, lifted Bernard three inches off the floor. It was a very powerful punch and Hopkins would not have ever gotten up if he did not have supernatural powers. Hopkins could very well have died from that. Hopkins is a superman.

Joe is not a All time great but is a great champion. To be considered an all time great he would have to face and defeat a few more guys for his resume. All time time great should is not a title that should be given out just because. If Joe fought and beat Kelly pavlik, Jermaine Taylor, and Chad Dawson or at least two of the three the his resume would look completely different and we could then have this debate again.

              What!!???!!!!

Joe Louis era was one of the worst ever in HW history! The HW division was pure and utter **** until Louis cleaned it up. It's very comparable to the HW division that Tyson cleaned up to become champ.

And after Louis won the title he had those 'bum of the month' titledefense that was worthless.

Maybe Louis beat Max Schmeling, but with your definition SURELY he (Schmeling) can not be an ATG!

As a fan of Joe Louis, I can say, that his division was pretty weak. Had some good fighters on his record though, Schmeling, Sharkey, Wolcott, Conn etc. But most of the guys he beat were not ATGs or anywhere near,

Louis is still one of the greatest Heavyweights of all time though.
