Ali, while certainly the greatest heavyweight based on resume, has been greatly overrated in boxing by the general public for things outside of the ring unrelated to boxing. As the most highly touted fighter ever in the eyes of the public due in large part to his charisma and the above-stated factors, I would say it's between he and Tyson for the most overrated ever. Of course with Tyson we don't know how far he could have gone had his discipline (physical and mental) not broken down. The prison stint did him no favors either, but he was already slipping.

I'll conceed Chavez and the first Ramirez fight, but besides them he barely gets by a lot of the good fighters he fought.
No, he didn't just barely beat them. He outclassed just about everyone in his prime.

Why would you call Ali an overrated fighter? Seriously, I'd like to hear this...

I really don't get how Ali is overrated as a fighter, I know I'm biased but still, he came out on top at the golden era of heavyweights, beating most of the top contenders of the time past his prime, he was involved in more than 20 heavyweight title fights, would be over 30 if the NABF title is counted, the first 3 time heavyweight champion of the world, his style was unorthodox but that doesn't make him overrated either. I just don't get it.

Yea I agree Ali is a bit overrated, he has some un-called for losses on his resume to.

Joe Calzaghe is the most overrated fighter currently though.

Thats not fair at all, man. Ali is at best the greatest HW fighter that ever lived, and at worst top three all time. How could you call that overrated? Have you seen his record? The man is an immortal legend in the sport for good reason.

Note that I was claiming he was among the most overrated because the public (ie mostly non-boxing fans) overrate him to the point that he is the best fighter of all time, untouchable, and lacking any weaknesses. Among hardcore boxing fans I think he is rated properly, but he is more often than not judged and rated as a boxer for things unrelated to boxing by those outside of the boxing circle (and he is known among this group more than any other boxer in the living memory of most).

A fighter being able to KO someone is not justification for calling them overrated. Saying they have no power? Fine. But calling them an overrated fighter? Bull****. Hell I could say it made him an even better fighter, that with the handicap of weak power he still managed to become an ATG fighter.
