We do know that the main reason Robinson boxed was because of money.
Even Burley admitted that there wasn't much money in it and that he would not have given Robinson the chance if he was in Robinson's position, although he certainly wanted the fight. Burley had nothing to lose really.

I'm sure Robinson would be criticized for it today with million dollar paydays and all that but in his time people understood the reasons better because there wasn't as much money around. Robinson still ended his career almost penniless, as did most fighters.

Not making any excuses for Sugar Ray, it's essentially the same thing that Mayweather is doing now (and I haven't criticized him), although the times were obviously different.
Robinson however did make his way up by taking tough fights for little money before he won the world title and he did fight the top ranked challengers as the champion.
Didn't know he was the underdog for the thrid fight with Olson. Why was he? I guess you are right about Burley, it's just frustrating that he never got a title shot. Same with Sam langford, but he has nothing to do with Robinson.

You mean "was a coward" not "is a coward"
Eh. It was like 2 A.M. when I wrote it, but you are right.

Robinson gets some flack on message boards here and there for not fighting some of the "Black Murderers Row".

For the most part, they were bigger than him. Sure he COULD have fought them, but why should he be criticized for not facing middleweight contenders when he was a welterweight contender? Because he fought middleweight contender Jake LaMotta, it meant he had to fight other quality big guys like Lloyd Marshall?

The criticism for "ducking", or "avoiding" Cocoa Kid and Charley Burley I can see, but the others, it seems like reaching IMO.

When I first wanted to make this thread, it was going to be how he ducked the "Black Muderers Row", but when researching I realized I couldn't find enough information on anyone ducking to make solid claims other then Burley and Moore. Even though I don't really believe in fighters "ducking" each other (Managers avoiding other fighters is different), I decided to put Robinson ducking Burley and Moore anyway just to make the thread more interesting.

By the way, what do you know about Holman Williams? How good was he?

Williams was a great fighter. I think among the Black Murderers Row, he and Burley are the only guys in the Hall of Fame, but Eddie Booker and Lloyd Marshall should be in there as well. Take a look at the IBHOF page and look at the inductees, and look at how many HOFers Booker and Marshall beat in their resumes (they beat other quality fighters as well as some HOFers).

From what I've read, Ray was supposed to fight in an exhibition, but he found out at the last minute it was Cocoa Kid. I'm not sure if they said it was a "real" fight or an exhibition, but Ray was like "**** you, I signed and prepared for an exhibition, and you have me fight Cocoa Kid?" and pulled out right before, and never bothered to fight him afterwards.

It's been a while since I followed his career, but last time I checked he was 4-0 and he looked pretty good on ESPN. Why a *****?
