if i remember correctly, it was the fight that was billed as "boxings superbowl" or more or less the last major event boxing had to offer, not so much the fight to save boxing, most writers were saying after mayweather/de la hoya there were no major events boxing would have left. i still have the sports illustrated/espn the magazine lying around somewhere

I think everyone on BS can agree that July 26th was a great night for Boxing!

2 Mayweather vs. De La Hoya fights = hurt boxing

2 Margarito vs. Cotto fights = help boxing

Let me ask yall this. How many of you all have returned to a club or restaraunt you didn't like or werent satisfied with? You dont right?

DLH/Mayweather was supposed to be "the fight to save boxing". De La Hoya promised fireworks in the ring and Mayweather promised a "toe to toe" battle and that he was going to "slaughter" Oscar in the ring all through out the press conferences, interviews, and the 24/7 series.

So 2.5 Million people buy the fight to see this fight that is supposed to be one of the best of all time, a dramatic, action packed fight that the promoters, the fighters hyped up and what happens?

Oscar gasses out and Floyd plays it safe.

When a fight becomes all business and is hyped up to the level or the stage that "The World Awaits" was hyped up to, you better damn well give the crowd what they wanted because at this point, its about entertainment. You can say its about the win and you're right, but you better win in a fashion that you promised you would, in the manner of which the people who paid to watch you fight were expecting.

But it didnt pan out that way and you had 2.5 Million people talking **** about boxing. 2.5 Million people saying, "That was it? THIS is the best Boxing has to offer? Boxing is STILL boring." And there went comes Dana White and the MMA fans rubbing it in the face of the sport with the "I told you so" attitude.

And the result of that was 1.7 Million people LESS buy Mayweather/Hatton even though Mayweather now was supposed to be the biggest draw in the sport.

So realize this, its NOT about the amount of PPV's a fight gets, but the QUALITY of the fight that saves the sport. Fights like De La Hoya/Mayweather, Mayweather/Baldomir, Hopkins/Wright are fights that should not be PPV. Why? Because fighters like Mayweather and Hopkins go into a fight HYPING the **** out of it overpromising while already having the game plan of doing as little as possible in a fight to get the W and that kills the sport in the mainstream, especially in a society that wants action. At this point, causal fans are PAYING for entertainment and they DONT get it. Thats why UFC dominates bars now. Thats why Elite XC is on CBS. A fight doesn't have to be Gatti/Ward, but if a fighter wants to be a PPV fighter, then he must be ready to give fans what they want because they are paying for it. If a fighter doesn't care to give what the fans want, then be happy with HBO, ESPN, and Showtime. Don't over hype a fight by acting like a bafoon and promising to do things that will not be done because at that point, they are just scamming the paying fans.

If you disagree, then stop complaining about our sport dying, stop complaining the mainstream not acknowledging our sport. Because things will not change and you seem content with it.
[Typical]**** it, Floyd got paid, I'm happy! u mad ?[/Floyd stan]

Yeah, we need more matchups like this on the big stage. This fight had people I work with talking about it about a week later and they weren't even big boxing fans. They just knew that they had witnessed a kick ass fight. And for us hardcore fans, the fight was that much better. It was built up well with the style difference, the national rivalry and the uncertainty of who would win the fight. Other great matchups that would deliver:

            Kelly Pavlik vs Mikkel Kessler
            Manny Pacquiao vs Edwin Valero
Tony Margarito vs Oscar De La Hoya
            Tony Margarito vs Shane Mosley
            Shane Mosley vs Andre Berto
Juan Manuel Marquez vs Humberto Soto

All these fights would produce fireworks

              The real savior!

This was a very good fight but on a world stage it failed. For one it only was only huge in puertorican and mexican fans. I know a lot of other races watched too, but not like the spanish fans. For you to say it put boxing back on board is a lie. It helped maintain the course, but it did little on the world stage. mayweather put boxing back on the world stage by promoting hisself on every level. He alone brought fans back to boxing , and a hell of alot of new fans too, all diffrent ages. People who never would have watch it , now love boxing. Mayweather was on celebrity dance shows, WWE monday night wrestling/ payperview, any fool knows that WWE has millions on fans. He was on bet 106 & park, he did a UFC interview, even though most UFC down boxing they watched him ko hatton for 50 dollars and loved it, now they too are boxing fans. He even started a fad with countdown on HBO. THATS RIGHT MAYWEATHER STARED COUNTDOWN, FOR HIS DE LA HOYAH FIGHT ., AND NOW EVERYBODY IS DOING IT. So you see one little fight would not save this sport. It was the brains of Mayweather , the flashy **** talking Money Mayweather who brought back the spotlight on boxing. Do your reserch and holla back at me.

Yeah, this is a typical Margs cronie answer. Lets blame Floyd for the state boxing is in today, and credit Cotto and Margs for bringing the fans back lol. Lets bring boxing up another level and hope Williams-Margs can be made, and ask Margs to stop asking to fight an old man.

You fail to understand one thing.

Hardcores already know when Floyd talks like that, its bull****. When he is talking like that to a potential paying audience and fails to deliver on his pitched product, guess what?

The casual fans who he lured in with that bs won't tune back in.

                  See Hatton-Mayweather.

You have your opinion, but that's simply what it is an opinion. Sorry dude, it makes no sense, but good try. Mayweather did more harm to the sport by talking a lot and never delivering. When fighters and promoters call on everyone to watch and then fail to deliver a great performance, people turn thier backs because they feel conned of thier hard earned money, i.e., De La Hoya vs Mayweather, that fight ******. If we get more performances like the one Margarito and Cotto gave, boxing will eventually dig itself out of the hole Mayweather put the sport in. The general public hates boxing and is turning to more "excitement", turning to MMA which they feel delivers the kind of excitement that boxing does not. Boring fighters who provide more excitement with thier mouth, but fail to deliver excitement in the ring are to blame for this.
