Like you stated training keeps you in shape, but it doesnt keep you sharp. Your timing is not there your reactions are not there and you can train all you want but you will still be a "rusty". He hadnt fought in about a year and half before the delahoya fight. That had to have some play in his performance even though it's hard to say that considering how well he fought, but then it makes you think what if he had a couple fights between that or maybe even just a tune up fight would that have made his performance that night even better? I don't know hard to say considering we seen probably the best of ike quartey that night. It does boggle your mind to think "what if" he did have a couple fights or a tune up before the delahoya fight.
Good Post man. Well worth the wait again. Another intelligent and intellectual response which is exactly what I was looking for with the question!!

I dont remember the exact reason y it was pushed back. I dont think it was injury, I think it was some kind of contractual dispute. Correct me if Im wrong please.

If that was the case which I think it may have indeed been, that is y I feel DLH tried to play that type of role to give Quartey more time. But time in a bad way by not getting in the ring for another extended period of time.!

DLH claimed a cut over his eye in sparring. A cut which, by the way, was so invisible that renowned writer Michael Katz showed up at the presser with a magnifying glass.

Bottom line, Oscar wasn't ready at the time. And a few more months of inactivity didn't help Ike either.

Thats what I mean though. DLH considers himself a Mexican fighter. He has always and always will. So being a Mexican fighter, would you want to fight someone else who was Mexican knowing that his fans would somewhat turn on him and cheer for the other fighter?!?!

            Hope thats a lil better!
Thanks for the compliment I'll be honest haven't seen you post much but you do seem like a poster that knows his stuff. As far as you question goes it's a hard one. DeLahoya has always claimed the "mexican warrior" image and i guess he has every right too since he was indeed born to two mexican parents. I just don't like how he is in a sense white washed but still wants to have the mexican crowed in his favor. When he fought chavez he was all 100% mexican out not so much when he fought floyd. It's like he'll do whatever he has to do to win over the general public and keep his pretty boy image. In regards to him not wanting to fight margarito. He said he would never fight chavez and he did twice taking advantage of his old age. He also fought Vargas post trinidad when before trinidad dlh said no to a fight with vargas. Margarito's fan base and following doesn't come close to those of Vargas' and Chavez's at the time. So if he fought those two guys why not margarito? He also said he wouldn't fight cotto because he's puerto rican, for his wife's sake then say's ok i will. i don't see why he's scared to fight and have the crowed against him. Im sure he will have a lot fans as well in the arena. Marco and Erik never thought about having mexicans cheer against them, neither did marquez vs vasquez, or marquez vs marco. I think in fact dlh would gain a little respect from the die hard mexican fans if he did take a fight with margarito and go in there and give us a great fight.

Fight was scheduled for November and pushed to February. Really, I knew it wasn't happening after that "grueling" fight with Chavez only a couple months before.

Quartey was a guy DLH wouldn't fight...until Jose Louis Lopez put him on his ass.

Quartey was giving de la hoya all he can handle. Quartey's killer jab was on point almost all night. he even floored delahoya with a hook (quartey down twice). Delahoya knew he was down his own trainers were telling he needed a knock out in the corner before the 12th began. And you can see the way de la hoya came out in the twelve HE ABSOLUTELY KNEW he needed a ko to win the fight. Quartey was one the most underrated guys in boxing. I think him and clottey are very much alike in that their great fighters not realitevely known.
sorry bit you really went too far there buddy. first of all oscars corner never said he needed a ko to win. i know spanish very well my dad is mexican and my mothe is philippine. oscars corner told him in spanish becareful oscar don't do nothin ******, we need this round...don't throw the dugt away! those were robert alcazar exact words on oscars corner so uut making up lies just because some people don't know spanish in here
