Being more aggressive against Vargas and Taylor would have probably won him both of those bouts more clearly.

I doubt it would have helped much against Hopkins.

I don't know anything about the Harry Simon fight though.
In the Simon fight Winky lost the first half of the fight but won the second half. It was originally announced as a draw (like Barrera-Juarez I) but changed to a Simon win. IMO a draw would have been fair.

I heard that the reason you could have Simon winning is because Simon just outworked the Winky that was a slickster back then.

That was the case for the first five rounds, but Winky figured him out and outboxed him after that. The rounds that Simon won were probably more decisive.

I've heard the score switch in that fight was uber-fishy... like a 4 point swing on one card or something to change it from a draw to a Simon win.

I'm always extremely su****ious whenever that happens, especially if it is in South Africa and favoring the hometown fighter.

A draw option really should've been added.

I had Winky winning by 2 pts, but could've seen a draw. Wink didn't do himself any favors by fighting the 12th round in complete earmuff mode.

I forget the exact round by round, but had it 6-3 Winky after 9, and I'm pretty sure I scored it Rd 10 for Vargas, 11 for Wink and 12 for Vargas.

It was a completely different fight stylewise, but in scoring was similar to DLH-Quartey earlier that year. Ike and Wink were up after 9 but took their foot off the gas just enough down the stretch to let their opponents back in and put themselves in a situation to be robbed.

Then again... sometimes people who count the cards really are just ****ing brain dead...

                  WE HAVE A SPLIT DECISION...

JUDGE RICHARD FLAHRITY (sp?) scores the bout... 111-107 CORY SPINKS!

Great... that is obviously a realistic scorecard in a fight that had nothing even remotely resembling a 10-8 round... ****ing morons.

Winky found out the hard way, like DLH did against Tito, what happens when you don't try to win the championship rounds.

A few years later he would make the same mistake against Taylor.

I only watched this fight for the first time recently. To be honest I felt that Winky was quite a bit better. He just seemed to be superior to Vargas in almost every way that night.
