Why Calzaghe deserves more respect around here.

In order to get the respect he may already deserve Joe Calzaghe has to dare to be great. He just has to say **** it and take a fight that will earn him the highest accolades he can possibly garner. Every great fighter did it. I'm not sure who the opponent will be but I think it'll be sorted out within the next 6-8 months. And after Jones, that's the person he should fight.Comment

bhop is not nearly the fighter he was 5 years ago, and at this point dawson will most likely beat him.Comment

Don't think Joe Calzaghe wants any parts of Glen Johnson. What fighter does? Dawson was a fool to take that fight but he wanted to prove himself. I hope he isn't ruined.
That would've been a great for Calzaghe a few years ago but if he didn't take it then - when Johnson was avoided and Calzaghe claimed he was avoided - he certainly won't take it now that he holds all the cards. But what a fight that would be.Comment

So let me get this straight... You're saying that Calzaghe shouldn't be given respect for beating guys who he hasn't... but on the other hand, he should?Comment

Calzaghe would beat Johnson easily, as I've said before. Too fast, too much variety, could match him for workrate, too good all round. It might look a bit like the Calzaghe - Brewer fight.Don't think Joe Calzaghe wants any parts of Glen Johnson. What fighter does? Dawson was a fool to take that fight but he wanted to prove himself. I don't think so. And that's a terrible, terrible comparison. Brewer had good power and no chin. And he was more of a boxer who had a pension to brawl. Glen Johnson isn't like that all. I'd be very curious to see what happens to Calzaghe if he's forced back a fighter - not because of the guys pop - but his sheer durability, strength, workrate and will. Something he's struggled with in the past.Comment

yeah easily but in all fairness calzaghe beats everyone in boxing easily. it's not really fair being that good.Comment

I don't think its that bad of a comparison, Brewer's problem was a tendency to get knocked down, not out, and his chin looked solid against Calzaghe(!). He wasn't the pressure fighter that Johnson is, but against Joe he did precious little boxing and had his best moments coming straight forward and the fight was mostly a straight up brawl. Joe's response to 'real' pressure is, I think, to stand and fight, where his handspeed and ability to throw a large number and variety of punches wins him the day, as against Brewer.I don't think so. The other possibility Joe might try against Johnson is something akin to what he did to Lacy on the rare occassions Lacy mustered anything up: sidestep the attack and flurry in return. Johnson is pretty straight ahead so he might have some success like this, and it might be the advisable course, but my feeling is it would be a bit of a war, with Calzaghe's greater speed and skill prevailing over the more limited Johnson, with Joe doing the best work even when going backwards.Comment
