how can Joe Calzaghe achieve P4P 1 status before retiring

Hopkins is a BIG LHW now, as we saw against Calzaghe, and I believe he has good pop on his punches when he wants to. If he is to beat Pavlik I'd say it may be his best shot. What do you reckon, early assault or keep Pavlik at bay till the home stretch then try and take him out? That's what he did against Taylor.

I don't think he's a big LHW, but his pop is a tad underrated and Pavlik's chin is severely overrated. I don't think he can do what he did to Taylor anymore. he just doesn't have that punch output anymore. At all. I think the later rounds will be very hairy for him unless he can do big damage early on. And he can do that against Pavlik. But Kelly won't stop coming and I don't know a 43yr old fighter is gonna stave him off.

He lost six out of eleven fights I think. That being so, there was never a good reason for Joe to face him, nor for him to face the best guy in the division who would doubtless add another L. Then he went up to LHW to kill Jones and got good. Joe stayed at SMW to beat Lacy and Kessler. Ho hum.

i'm a pretty big Hopkins fan but he's not going to beat Pavlik. Although i'll be routing for him.

Everyone is a fan of a fighter, and is guilty of minor nut hugging, but Calzaghe is the worst..the most overrated fighter to date.

I can see Hops KO'ing Pavlik...no BS. But I think the more likely scenario is that Pavlik walks him down and possibly stops him late. Hopkins is OLD.

Hopkins won't be stopped, ever. He keeps his chin too low, perfectly placed into his chest and shoulders, Kelly won't catch him clean.

The most likely outcome is for the first 6 rounds, Hopkins puts on an amazing display of boxing craft and ring generalship, then begins to fade while Pavlik gets stronger, throwing dozens of punches per round, scoring him the split decision.

And as for a good reason to fight him...well, for starters, everyone knew how good he was and Calzaghe, more than anyone else, probably knew how many times he'd been robbed.

Don't forget that Johnson was vying for a title when he fought Roy - winner fighting Woods. So for Calzaghe, it was either Glen Johnson or Antonio Tarver, fresh off stopping Jones in 2. Calzaghe didn't want that AT ALL. Sadly, he didn't really want Johnson either.

Actually it will. No reason to totally slate Pavlik, because he would have been beaten by a 'legend' (American), but that would have to mean that Hopkins was not a 'grandpa' anymore so Joe beating him would have to count.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of them claimed Hopkins discovered the elixir of eternal life inbetween fights.

That's highly likely.

However, sure Hops can be stopped. He's 43 and he's fading in fights earlier and earlier...the Winky fight was the first true sign. It was even more telling against Joe C. No one one punch can put Hops away but a steady dose of pressure, volume punching and Father Time can do it to anyone.

Fair enough if thats what you think. You do seem to blame Calzaghe for every fight that was never made though. Don't you think it possible that a number of fighters preferred to avoid the undefeated, iron chinned southpaw with the awkward style? I do.
