  • CompuBox Analysis: Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito

By CompuBox - The sudden retirement of Floyd Mayweather Jr. has had a profound effect on boxing in general and the welterweight division in particular. In wider terms, boxing pundits were asked to identify a new pound-for-pound king and Manny Pacquiao quickly filled that void with his spectacular ninth round destruction WBC lightweight champion David Diaz last month. This Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (32-0, 26 KO) will fight recently stripped IBF king Antonio Margarito (36-5, 26 KO) for the right to be called the division's pre-eminent figure. The 27-year-old Cotto is a 2-to-1 favorite to defeat the 30-year-old Mexican and become that man.

Given their respective styles, it is difficult to imagine anything other than a breathtaking display of fistic fireworks. Cotto is a left hooking aggressor who has shown he can box when necessary while the long-limbed Margarito boasts a whirlwind attack that has earned him the nickname of “The Tijuana Tornado.” In a year that has already seen half a dozen Fight of the Year candidates, Cotto-Margarito has the potential to top them all. Wonder what Margarito will look like at the end of the night. Many of Cotto's opponents look like a different person at the end of the fight.

I'm picking Cotto by UD or Margarito's corner will throw in the towel late.

People here argue that Margarito throws 150 punches a round. Thats only when he has nothing to worry about. From what I've seen he slows down a LOT when he has something coming back at him. And I think Cotto is the last person he would want to charge with looping punches over and over.

You guys are vastly overrating Cotto. Watch.

Lack of knowledge of the respective fighters!

I say flip the script on this. Cotto will control the early rds wit good boxing, and Tony will overpower him in the later rds. He's got a better chin and better stamina, and the late rd rally will get him the title.

Actually man, you got it backwards. Cotto has the speed and I'd give Margarito the power. ****, Cotto was matching Mosley for handspeed which is shocking considering how tank-like and big Cotto's physique looks. I also agree with what the article says. Cotto will be the deciding factor on how this goes. Margarito has one thing and that's going forward throwing punches. How Cotto decides to deal with that is what makes this match exciting. He can try boxing but as they say a lot of times with Pacquiao fights, sooner or later, your gonna have to fight him, you can't just box him for a full 12 rounds. There's no way in hell.
