Like it or not, admit it or not, but organizations like the UFC remembered how to promote fights. Boxing promoters have forgotten how to promote. Which makes you wonder why they are getting paid in the first place.
That a fight of this magnitude, that could end up fight of the year, is not generating sales even in this economy...don't let boxing promoters blame it on the weather in Nevada.
I hope this fight does amazing business, because it deserves it. This is what boxing is all about, the best fighting the best.

Goodwill is an asset, while it is intangible its still an asset that can be realised in monetary terms. These guys are doing very little to accrue it.
The promoters also are to blame, how do they define their jobs if someone like Cotto can not fill up an arena. You will all remember that a week before the Judah-Cotto fight some tickets worth $75 were still available.

Las Vegas is too far for the Mexicans in California and no Puerto Ricans live around there. After building up these two very well and expanding their fanbases for years he ends up putting them in a place where no one is even remotely interested. Idiot.
Should've put it in either NYC or LA, guaranteed sell-out. Everyone knew the idiotic "casual fans" wouldn't be interested in this one, except maybe Arum I guess.

You cant leave all that to the promoter. The Cotto brand belongs to Cotto not Arum that’s why Cotto has to find ways of going mainstream. Some people like Floyd have worked hard to build it,doing Dancing with the stars and training for the fight at the same time shows how determined the guy was to build himself.
Some market penetration strategies will do for Cotto,he cant just depend on the Purto Ricoans to sell a fight, that’s limiting his own fanbase.

The point here is EXACTLY to go to the fanbases of each fighter for help. That's why they're there! That's why I'm saying, NY or LA. It's not the boxers fault at all, they don't have to gather attention for a fight at all. Especially when they both already have huge Mexican and PR fanbases. This is all on Arum having too high expectations.
He already messed up with Pavlik-Lockett and Diaz-Pacquiao, he's definitely going through a cold streak.Last edited by Majority_Draw; 07-16-2008, 09:10 AM.

[details]
So I believe, no matter how a fight like Cotto vs Margarito is considered gigantic in proportion, it should now be, however, understandable why ticket sales are low considering all the reasons given above!

Boxing is just like any product, there are enough people to buy it but you have to persue the people.Cotto is an elite athlete who could be selling fights fast considering the way he fights. He has everything working for him apart from his business advisors. He ought to change people around him because he’s not getting rewarded for the risks he is taking. You cant say its not Cotto’s problem because it easy.Cotto choses who handles his business.
