I beg to differ. Chavez _is_ regarded as one of the best boxers of all time. However, there are some reasons why some might not give him the respect he deserves.
1) For newer boxing fans: They've never seen vintage Chavez, and none of his classic fights are shown on TV. It's possible they've seen one of his more recent fights, which is nothing compared to the amazing fighter he was in his prime. Perhaps they've just read Jeff Ryan's complaints in The Ring magazine about Chavez continuing to fight so long. Anyone who actually did see Chavez's last fight, though, can't help but feel a little disappointed about how his career ended.
2) He was a Don King fighter for much of his career. Many people not only hate Don King but anyone associated with him.
3) Many claim that the draw he received against Pernell Whitaker was a robbery and that his knockout of Meldrick Taylor with just two seconds left in the fight was actually just a bad call by referee Richard Steele.
4) In addition to all the great opponents he fought, Chavez faced more than a few sub-par opponents both while starting out and as tune-up fights after becoming an established fighter.
5) In his prime, Chavez got a lot of attention from the boxing media. Sometimes other fighters were overlooked because of this, which led to resentment by those fighters' fans. Grudges can stick around a long while.
6) He wasn't a heavyweight. Regardless of how good they are, lower weight fighters will never receive the amount of recognition that heavyweights do.
Julio Cesar Chavez is generally regarded as the best Mexican fighter of all time, and he's probably one of the best overall. If only they'd show some of his classic fights on TV, there'd be many more people who could recognize his greatness.Comment

Chavez didn't have any particular skill that stood out, he was just good in some areas, great in others. And really, I favor resume over skills - anybody can look great given the right opponent. Chavez's resume is excellent.
But to understand how great he was, you need to ask other fighters. Nelson, Whitaker, Camacho, Taylor, etc. swear by him. You don't rule as the NUMBER ONE POUND FOR POUND FIGHTER FOR YEARS unless your great.
Sadly, most of you know only of his battles against Oscar, Taylor and Whitaker. I could tell you about who he beat, etc. but a lot of you aren't familiar with those names, will go on boxrec and find ways to discredit them-not understanding the context of those wins. Here's to hoping those who are really interested dig a lil deeper.Last edited by IMDAZED; 07-07-2008, 04:05 PM.Comment

JCC is a legend. Anyone who wants to discredit a fighter of his significance should reconsider if they are even a boxing fan.
Anyone who has seen him fight, knows how great he really was. His committment to punches, his relentlessness, his tremendous heart, outstanding body punching (He is probably in the top 5 best body punchers in the history of boxing).... and so many other qualities.
Julio Cesar Chavez should have everyone's respectComment
