That is completely untrue. Calzaghe did not have a large fanbase until he beat Jeff Lacy.

Roy Jones just like Hopkins is an experienced veteran with good ring intelligence, and unlike Hopkins he has a better work-rate. I expect Jones to throw many counter-rights.

He avoided plenty of fights. There were plenty of big names at light-heavy but he chose to stick it out at 168 with the WBO belt racking up meaningless title defenses so he could have claim to have broken the title defense record.

The difference between Hopkins and Calzaghe is, Hopkins had no choice but to stay at 160 and defend his IBF title for years. He had no big fan base or following and nobody wanted any of him. His IBF title was his only negotiating tool to get fights.

Calzghe on the other hand had a very big fanbase and could have used it to come to America like Ricky Hatton did. He didn't need to cling on to his belt for so long. Only this year did he finally do it to fight a broken down 43 year old who has been largly inactive the last few years.


I give Calzaghe just a lil more credit then current WBO light-heavy champ Zolte Erdei who himself has 10 title defenses now.

Calzaghe didnt have a huge fanbase at all. He went from unpopular to respected but stayed mostly fairly obscure. The Lacy fight introduced him to the general public.

I actually enjoyed this post. Look, just read the thread starter and I think we're in agreement. In the end you're responsible for your own career... often you have to make sacrifices to make the big fights... more often than not... Joe didn't.
