Retire Joe Cortez

Those last 30 seconds were very confusing with Cortez motioning to stop then not stop and motioning to jump in for the knockdown then not jumping in. Also, Lorenzo bending down to dodge punches then getting up then going down again. Obviously Soto was not trying to get cheap shots in. The blow was clearly the result of confusion and the moment. It was unintentional and he got robbed. Fortunately almost everyone who watched knew who actually won the fight.Comment

I also think what was so disgraceful about it was the fact that Cortez had said 'I will take a point off or they could be disqualified'. Now, in this situation, it was entirely not worthy of any disqualification, of any sort, whatsoever! The most that should have happened was a point taken off.
Soto did not hit him intentionally in the back of the head when he was down. There was no delayed reaction from Soto when Lorenzo went down, then Soto hit him. You should only be disqualified when it was clearly an intentional punch to the back of the head when he was down, not while it was in full action without a delay.
Lorenzo went down as Soto was throwing. He was already in action. It was simply a terrible, terrible decision. In the state that Lorenzo was in, why did Cortez even jump in then let them fight again straight away? Why did he keep jumping in at all? It was at the very end of the fight and Soto had it won. There should have been a time out called and a point take from Soto at the worst. It was a awful call.
Cortez should be fired or just quit. You should not even notice the referee. If we are talking about the referee then he is not doing his job very well. If we are always talking about the same referee then it is definitely a very bad thing. I think the problem with some referees like Cortez is that they suddenly think they are actually part of the fight. He gets involved way too much in fights and effects the outcome too much. Not so much the outcome but the action and sometimes, as in this case, the outcome.Last edited by BennyST; 06-29-2008, 08:50 AM.Comment

God, that is one terrible way of seeing it. Cortez is an absolute disgrace to officials everywhere. Why does he feel the need to keep effecting the action and jumping in? There is no need at all for it and it does nothing to either fighter but screw things up and possibly make any situation very confusing.Comment

Excellent commentary Benny. Not everything that goes on in a boxing ring is pretty. A referee has to use judgement and discretion in making a decision like that. There was clearly no malicious intent there. Cortez was a total incompetent ******* and he embarrassed himself and the Nevada commission.I also think what was so disgraceful about it was the fact that Cortez had said 'I will take a point off or they could be disqualified'. Really was a sad day. Cortez is just getting overly officious and is starting to think he is actually part of the fight and that's where it goes wrong. Let's just hope they do something about it.

I hate referees who are too slow to step in between fighters...either too old or too out of shape, and I hope Soto doesn't get penalized by match makers for this
Refs should be made to stay in shape like NFL refsComment

The other guy DID get hit behind the head, and it did happen when he was down. But what made it a messed up decision is the way Cortez kept trying to braek them up, seemingly not knowing what the hell he was gonna do(either stop it or seperate them when no excessive clinching is happening.) Basicely, Soto was confused by Cortez because he didn't know when to stop. If Cortez handled it better, there would have been no problems.
So to me, it's not that he called for a hit that didn't happen(it did), it's the fact that it's his fault that it happened the way it did.Comment

It really looked like Cortez was trying to make sure that Soto didn't win. Very fishy. The other guy DID get hit behind the head, and it did happen when he was down.
