Calzaghe when he fought Eubank-Brewer was prime, Hopkins that fought Tito was prime they are different fighters than we know today.
        The difference's are :-
Hopkins hadn't developed as good a defence (still better than joes)
        More willing to trade
        Better Stamina/Workrate
        Occasionally exciting
        Much better body punching
        Different Style

        Calzaghe had Power
Stamina was better (already pretty darn amazing for a 36 year old)
        Threw straighter punches
        DIDN'T SLAP
Threw consistant bombs to go with the workrate
        Fast hand/foot speed

A see Calzaghe losing the early rounds when he gets tagged badly he learns to switch up his game and try and get inside on Hopkins remember this isn't a Hopkins that clinched consistantly. Calzaghe and Hopkins share the middle rounds and then Calzaghe superior stamina and workrate win him the later rounds on route to a 114-113 decision in favour of Calzaghe because of aggression which is what judges do seem to favour most of the time.

bernard has been past his prime for years now. at his best days he would have beaten calzaghe clearly no doubt.

Its not like Calzaghe and Hopkine are equally past their prime. Calzaghe was more closer to his prime than Hopkins was. A peak Hopkins was excellent at taking away his opponents best weapon. He had the tools and ability to nullify Joe's work rate and foot speed(which he showed in their recent fight). He could keep up the pace for the entire fight and was always in fastastic shape. So, i would have to respectively disagree.

Prime Calzaghe beat Prime Hopkins by Tko in nine. Prime Jones and maybe Toney would be the only SMW's to have a decent chance against a prime Calzaghe.

True, Hopkins could be exciting and Calzaghe was pretty much always exciting back then.

I believe that Calzaghe is better now than he was when he was young. He was more of a ****er and depended more on his power when he was young and that would make it easier for Bernard to figure him out. Now Calzaghe is an excellent technical southpaw with all of the angles and is a lot more multi dimensional. He also throws more punches now. Depending on power against Hopkins wouldn't be smart becuase it would be negated.

Probably so, no-one is prime at 43. However, I consider Calzaghe to be the only man in boxing smarter in the ring than Hopkins is. It was Joe shortening his punches in their recent fight that won it for him and it was a switchup that Hopkins had no answer to. I think Hopkins at his best might very well beat the Calzaghe that faced Eubank, but I cannot see any version of Hopkins beating the Joe that fought Lacy and Kessler, and I know you understand boxing so I guess its easy to see why I think that, even if you don't agree.
