Why Dont the HARDCORE fans Appreciate the CASUAL Fans...???

i appreciate what the casual fan does...

they purchase all the big ppv's and help contribute to the money flow (in a major way) which brings us good fights in the end.

Without casual fans boxing WOULD be in trouble...i dont think boxing is currently in trouble i just think they need to go back to free tv...that would help everything out.

The problem is not casual fans per se, they probably know of most of the upper echelon boxers in their country, which frankly, is fair enough. What they tend not to know is how good a boxer is at a particular time.

The problem is that TV and promoters are greedy and are prepared to exploit the gaps in the casual fans knowledge for profit. So we get Calzaghe v Jones instead of Calzaghe v Pavlik.

Thing is though, we do complain a bit too much. Who here is not going to watch Calzaghe v Jones!!!!?

As soon as the Heavyweight division has an exciting, english speaking, DOMINANT champion then Boxing will come back. It always has.

All the era's without a dominant Heavyweight champion have fallen into obscurity with maybe 4 fighters being recognised. As soon as a DOMINANT heavyweight champion is introduced it picks back up again.

I'm not sayin the smaller fighters aren't important but that only the BIGGEST smaller fighter get noticed by the casual fans. Even Klitchko-Imbragov did decent numbers despite no one knowing who he is, it's because he's the heavyweight champion.

I kinda Agree with what you saying....but i think Casual Fans want to see the good fights just like the Hardcore one's do too..

Speaking as someone from the UK, that is absolutely crazy to me. I can barely even believe that MMA is a serious rival to boxing over there, because over here although it has its fans it is probably closer to being banned than it is to gaining any kind of mainstream acceptance. If I was you I would kind of worry about it too.

I think probably what MMA does well that boxing does not is market itself to the white wannabe hip-hop crowd and metal crowd. From what I've seen it appears to be positioned kind of like skateboarding and extreme sports are: as "cool". Boxing I think sees and promotes itself very much more as a "sport", and I think also that it is actually not so easy to appreciate for these type of kids because it requires some degree of knowledge to be appreciated properly and does not offer the instant gratification hit of violence that MMA does, and that what these kids are looking for.

However, boxing has been around for a much longer time and has a huge history and tradition to back it up. 20 years from now, unless the world has gone crazy, the general public will still know the names "Roy Jones" and "Floyd Mayweather" but I would be very surprised if many people at all will recall "Kimbo Slice" and "Chuck Liddell", because their names will not be part of a richly remembered history in the same way that the greatest boxers names are.

We do need CASUAL fans... yet I'm not too fond of most of them. At least half of them is _very_ annoying and think that they know much more than you do.

Oh and they can be ****** too... Let's say we pick ummm.... Kelly Pavlik and move him up to HW just to fight Klitschko... The annoying casual fans who love Pavlik will argue with you for hours that he will KO Wlad. Madness....
