I remember a couple or three years ago I guess it was during the buildup to Lacy. Watching ESPN or whatever other boxing in America you would hear chatter about Joe Calzaghe and how he needs to step out of his country and fight over here if he wants to make a name for himself. Before that I doubt many americans had any clue who he was, I know I didnt and I follow boxing pretty closely.
Even watching boxing closely, not knowing about a SMW champion and no.1 of what 8 years at the time, is incredibly ignorant, sorry but true.
And since then, he has beat a way overhyped fighter(Lacy), another fairly unknown fighter in the US(Kessler), and an old Hopkins. I only watched highlights of the Lacy fight but did see Kessler and Hopkins live. I thought Kessler gave a game effort but did just enough to loose. And Hopkins style and wear ended up getting the best of him.
Lacy was favored even by those inside boxing to beat Calzaghe, even those in the UK. Goes to show how much the name thing in the US was exposed, and ppl are increasingly reluctant to not favor Joe when he's proved time and time again against several styles against the odds, he wins.

Hops best weapons against Joe were countering, super defense, and ring intelligence, 3 things he had best tweaked post 40 hence other big wins post that age. Age excuse once again doesn't cut it.

Kessler is a massive deal in boxing, most regard him 2nd only to Joe in the SMW division, he's like to face the likes of the so called names in Miranda and Pavlik in time, and many favour Kessler, pretty even, what does that say? Even Americans seem to be accepting this of Kessler in decent numbers now, as most elsewhere do.

So you have a guy thats 45-0 that has only fought one really big name as far as americans are concerned. I did recognize 7 of the 45 fighters he has fought names.
Well kinda answered before with the questioning of names, which is not the same outside of the states I'm afraid. Calzaghe faced many very respectable top 10 contendors, and demolished pretty much anyone sometimes whilst others struggled. Not our fault they weren't on US tv much, or the media, ppl didn't pick up on it much. Even HBO did features on this.

You guys in the UK talk about he should be the best SMW of all time when we over here dont know if most of his 45-0 record was built off of Gary Locketts.
Not all of us, a decent margin yes, with reason. He's remained no. 1 at SMW for an unprecedented time, is unbeaten, and ducked no one. Again, sorry not our fault you don't know the names enough, and Gary Lockett, no idea what he has to do with it.

I think I give up, don't think we will come to any kind of agreement here. All respect to you though, you've been mature in your arguments and I hope I have as well. I try to stay away from name calling and childish things but still try to express my thoughts strongly.
Respect to you aswell, it's all good man such is the nature of debating on forums, ppl learn new info, research, watch other fights, and alter they're view slightly, doesn't mean has to be complete consensus. That would just be boring.

What's Calzaghe proving by beating an old Jones?

Redemption is not without a sense of irony.

Both will beat Calzaghe. Everybody is sleeping on Roy Jones because he got knocked out a few times in a row but Roy Jones was a shell of himself after moving up to 200 to beat Ruiz then back down to fight Tarver. He needed time to restore his mind, body and soul but make no mistake about it RJJ is a special athlete. Dont be surprised if he completely embarrasses Calzaghe. A warning to those who under estimate the great Roy Jones Jr.: Redemption is not without a sense of irony.

          nothing.

he'll be improving his bank account though.

the guys is 36. if i was his advisor/friend i'd tell him cash in on big money with roy and/or tarver. retire undefeated and call it a career.

i wanna see pavlik against joe too but kelly doesn't really do much for joe's legacy. too much risk not enough reward.

              This article is highly misleading.

I have just read the REAL article on BBC Sport, and this fight is definitely not off. In fact, it's at the same stage it was before Kelly beat Lockett.

Joe says himself, he is more likely to fight RJJ, but he said that before Kelly fought Lockett.

We had also heard nothing of Roy pricing himself out, we all just assumed it was true because of the extra Calzaghe - Pavlik hype after the Lockett fight.

This fight may still happen, don't be fooled.

Good post. Joe is clearly confident, but I think Joe will find Roy more harder to beat then he thinks.

I'm actually really intrigued by this matchup, I love Pavlik but I was hoping Jones would get the nod.
