    Career suicide.
A fight with Calzaghe is probably the biggest money-maker for Pavlik right now, and if he loses it's very unlikely that it'll be by KO, so he won't be disgraced. Plus it'll be at SMW, so he can still come back down to 160 and claim to be the best in the division.

Really makes you seem either uneducated or seriously oblivious to reality. Its not about population, its about history. America has more elite athletes because the people are allowed to persue what makes them happy easier and are supported in whatever they may do. I in no way am saying that we have "better" athletes, just more top tier athletes. I know there are some sportsmen in the UK that are considered to be the best in the world at what they do. Just like in the U.S.A. And to be perfectly honest, you should be proud to be in one way or another associated to the U.S.A. At one point, your great, great, great, great grandfathers or relatives have decided to group together and set forth on making a free country for their loved ones and persisted until they stepped foot on our land and called it their own. That should mean something. I for one am proud as hell of my European roots at one point and have all kinds of respect for the old country. What I am saying is that we should really embrace each other and forget about anything surrounding the revolution, because we are really brothers when you look into it deep enough.
The population base of a country has an enormous amount to do with the number of top competing athletes. So does the country's prosperity, and in some cases, politics. Cold war USSR, anyone? And even China, didn't they have a steroid scandal last olympics?

I read somewhere that he has been slipping lately, but that he was truly an all time great. Kinda like Roy Jones is to boxing. Is that not fitting to say? I'm asking because I really don't know first hand. I do not play nor watch the sport.
My understanding is that Beckham has always been good but not great. I don't think he was ever close to being the best in his sport.

I agree with all this, except I think once he leaves 160 it will be for good.

That's cool, I doubt most of us UK posters know much about the sports that Americans like to watch.

Beckham the most famous player, but not the best.

I guess the closest comparison would be to Arturo Gatti: entertaining, popular, and very good, but not the best or even that close. Or maybe to de la Hoya because DLH is a massive draw even though he isn't the best.

Well said, Thanks for the enlightenment. One question though. IF he is not the best or at least exceptionally good, how is it that he is so popular? Is it because he is considered to be good looking and still a decent player? Or because he is married to a ****e Girl?

He was an excellent player in his day, but light years from being even close to the best. Basically his popularity is exactly because of the reasons you mention, his looks and his ****e Girl. He was signed by his last two teams Real Madrid and LA Galaxy primarily because that popularity and fame translates into HUGE marketing opportunities for the club brand.

You could at least put : Posted by Chase8400 and then "a Yank", next to it. That would be more respectful. See my other posts on here to understand me a little better. I replied in a decently long post after I wrote the Beckham one to you. You may even start to like me a little. I bet I would be your best friend if you knew me.

Well noted: If you don't mind me asking, who is the best UK football player? I want to know for my own thirst for knowledge.

If you'd looked to the right when you read my post, you'd have seen that I'm from Missouri (actually born in Oklahoma). The reason I think Kessler and Pavlik would be a great fight (I wouldn't pick a winner on this one, it'd be too close) is because I don't bull**** myself about any fighter, regardless of where he's from. I have my favorites, but that doesn't factor in when I'm trying to pick a winner. Pavlik happens to be one of my very favorites. He's tough, disciplined, sportsmanlike, well spoken and decent. Also very exciting to watch, and has a will of solid iron. And if it weren't for that last, he'd be simply a mediocre supermiddle.

LOL yeah mediocre guy that KTFO the undisputed MD and a top p4p guy
