-Mayweather made $20 million dollars for his May battle with Oscar De La Hoya, and Ellerbe told The Ledger that Cotto is not at that stage of the game. Even though Madison Square Garden was sold out with 20,600 fans, he says the popularity of the event was based on the location, and not the overall market value of the fighters involved. In his opinion, Cotto needs to go out and fight a higher level of opponents and make himself popular in other areas of the country before knocking on Mayweather's door.

    - "They fought Zab after he just got beat by Floyd, then he's suspended for a whole year and you can't count that little fight Zab had in April because it didn't even go a round. Zab didn't have a chance to get any work in. They caught Zab at the right time."

    - Mayweather said. “Me being a true champion, I think I'm going to retire undefeated. But if I do go out, I'm going out on my back. That's how a true champion's got to go out."

    - “Cotto needs a couple more tune-ups. Right now he’s a little too green,” Mayweather said.

    - Roger Mayweather said he considers Tszyu the true champion, but thinks Cotto actually would be his nephew’s most difficult fight at 140 pounds.

    - Mayweather said. “I don't look at anybody as a pushover. How do guys get known? They come in and upset top guys. I'm not letting some guy come in and upset me."

    - “Miguel Cotto is a punching bag…and Miguel Cotto knows he can’t beat me.”

    Cotto & Team Cotto:
-"That's the thing he does for his entire career. He run from the really good boxer kind, he choose the others. I don't know how the people who know about boxing put him in the first place in the pound-for-pound champion."

-Cotto says he sees vulnerablilities in Mayweather which he knows how to exploit. "He's quick. He's fast. But when you put pressure on him he closes his mind."

-"The fans, the company, my staff are great," the 27-year-old Cotto said. "I am ready for anyone."

-"I'll fight any big names: Oscar, Mayweather, Hatton, anyone top-ranked, whatever the company tells me," Cotto said after his 31st straight win. "I'm ready for the big names. No excuses. What the company wants me to do."

-"He always runs from me, makes excuses on why he shouldn’t fight Miguel Cotto. I'm here for the big names. If he doesn't want to fight me than I can do something else."

-"To beat Maywetaher, you have to put pressure on him, cut off the ring and be ready to throw a lot of punches, real punches - for all twelve rounds"

-"I never choose opponents. They always make the correct fights for me. I'm going to leave these things in their hands"

-"We’re rivals,” Cotto said. “Mayweather is a star of the sport and we’re in the same company. Mayweather was a great champion at 130 and 135. We don’t know about 140. When the company says the time is right to make the fight, I’ll fight him. I think it's a good fight. I know Mayweather's a great fighter. But I know I can beat him."

Reporter: Do you think Mayweather actually is afraid of you?
Cotto: I don't know what kind of reason he has for choosing another fighter. If you want to be the best you have to fight the best.
Reporter: You actually believe you will beat Floyd don't you?
Cotto: I'm pretty sure of that, because of my training. Because of my - I trust a lot in myself. And I'm always do more than 100% in my training sessions.

-Cotto says he sees vulnerablilities in Mayweather which he knows how to exploit. "He's quick. He's fast. But when you put pressure on him he closes his mind."

-Cotto said he doesn't need Mayweather, and he can't make Mayweather fight him because "I'm not a promoter."

-"I can't fight a guy who doesn't want to face me," Cotto said.

    The Media:
-We may never see Floyd vs. Cotto - the fight absolutely everyone wants to watch, with the exception of Floyd Mayweather.

-Miguel Cotto has brought that question into sharp focus. That's because, unlike Mayweather, Cotto is not a celebrity boxer. He is the craftsman who is only interested in perfecting his trade in a specific arena -- the boxing ring.

-Emanuel Steward, who pulled double duty on Saturday night working the corner of Kermit Cintron in his title match against Antonio Margarito and then working the HBO broadcast for the Cotto-Gomez fight, believes Mayweather should not be included in the welterweight mix. "He's a money fighter," Steward said. "He doesn't fight anybody."

-Mayweather-De La Hoya is viewed as nothing more than a money grab. Cotto-Margarito is seen as a ring war.

-Mayweather’s absolute silence about Cotto since the Gomez victory should be construed as further evidence that Mayweather would prefer to ignore Cotto than ever fight him. And that Floyd was being dishonest when he told us Cotto is just a punching bag and that Cotto knows he can’t beat Mayweather. So therefore the truth in Floyd’s heart of hearts is probably something more like, “Cotto is the best welterweight in the world today and I’m gonna keep my big mouth shut now because I don’t want to fuel his fire any more or fuel any talks of us ever fighting each other because I could never hold him off for 12 rounds. And hopefully Cotto will lose to Antonio Margarito and I will never ever have to fight that fearless relentless beast.” We’ll be on the lookout for the missing person Mayweather. Maybe he’s been having recurring nightmares about Cotto. Maybe he’s getting professional help to come to terms to deal with his fears. Or Bob Arum was right. Maybe Floyd did buy a ticket for a flight to Mars after seeing how violently impressive Cotto and Margarito were on April 12.

I'm a fan of both fighters, but can you imagine if Mayweather even entertained the thought of fighting Gomez. He'd be laughed out of the sport.
green k. if mayweather isn't fighting the big names than cotto isn't working to fight the big names. ppl always got to say that mayweather is running, but he would beat cotto far easier than he beat oscar. oscar is the better fighter even at this point in his career.

floyd needs to retire already. best thing for him too because history will remember undefeated champions. the longer he is at the top though, the longer the term "champion" gets watered down and cheapened.

Funny how you transposed ALL OF THAT EXACT same **** onto Cotto. When the other poster said that Cotto needed smarter fans than you he was right and wrong, because even though you're a song that only has one note, you aren't really even a fan of Cotto.
good God Dee........you picked hatton to beat floyd???.....i got the feeling you were more a floyd hater than an objective cotto/margs fan........lol......that is 2 guys who have pointed out contradictions on your thoughts........is there another?????.........lol.........
