If Mayweather stays retired and doesn't fight the Cotto's, Margaritos, Paul Williams or maybe even Pacquiao, then he is tarnashing his own legacy.

In order to be considered the best, you have to fight the best. I'm not saying Mayweather isn't a great fighter and a great champion but Oscar said it best in his new book when he said, "Mayweather is scared of defeat".

He fears losing and wants to go out undefeated but there will always be an asterisk next to his retirement because he's in the prime of his career and the best fighters of his generation are still out there.

Imagine if Sugar Ray Leonard decided never to fight Duran, Hagler or Hearns?? Where would he be in his legacy?

If Mayweather stays retired he will forever remembered as a great fighter but not THE greatest of his time, not even close. Because to BE the best, you must BEAT the best.
First off, he will never be considered the greatest even if he beats Cotto or Margarito.

Second, how do you know whether he is in his prime or not?? Because of his unbeaten record??? You can't win a few fights while undefeated? Maybe his body is breaking down and he decided to call it a day because he can't handle the intense workouts anymore.

    Nobody knows.

You and I both know that fight is going to end up happening.
Quit crying and wait for 2009.
I don't c anyone crying here, in fact i'm quite fine if mayweather decided to retire in his prime. Most of the bitching comes from the gayweathers, not the cottosexuals

        Exactly,

I still believe his retirement is a big ploy & anyone who doesn't see that is Helen Keller incarnate. Keep in mind that we live in a society where we forget people places & things very easily when they become irrelevant after time. Floyd will be no exception if he stays out longer than expected and the longer he stays out and tries challenging let's say Cotto by late 2009 at the earliest, it might be the biggest career mistake he's ever made.

        Humility can be a mother****er...

This is from an old thread of mine. Personally I think he's scared of losing his "0".

"Our goal is for Floyd to retire undefeated and possibly be mentioned in the likes of Robinson and Ali once his career is over". - Leonard Ellerbee.

It can be looked upon as we're gonna take on the best and stay undefeated, which is a lofty goal or We're going to match Floyd carefully for the rest of his career so remains undefeated.

I'm a fan of both fighters, but can you imagine if Mayweather even entertained the thought of fighting Gomez. He'd be laughed out of the sport.
Gomez beat Gatti.. who Floyd fought? are you stoopid?

Overall good post a few things I disagree with.

The only fighter that will tarnish PBF's legacy is Cotto. Nobody will look down on PBF's career if he doesn't fight Margarito or Williams they are not looked at as must see fights and never really have been. I feel PBF would not get that much credit for beating Manny because of the size difference. Think about it if you got people crying and whining about the size difference between PBF and Hatton can you really imagine what would be said about PBF vs. Manny.

**** what De la Hoya says and its easy for him to say **** like that because he always gets paid what he wants for fights. I don't knock PBF for making sure the business end of all his fights are what he wants before they happen. Of course I wish certain fights were made I love boxing but I won't look down on a man for wanting what HE feels he deserves.

What makes people feel PBF is scared to lose his "0"? Is it because he wants to be properly compensated for the fight? Is it because he fights in a style that he knows will win him the fight and not a style that people want to see him fight?

Floyd being scared of losing his 0 is common knowledge.

                  Nothing ground breaking about that.
