Roy Jones Jr vs. Joe Calzaghe: One and Done For Joe

Roy Jones is shot Chunk. The lightning fast impossible to hit Jones of old has been replaced with an easy to hit shadow of his former self. He is absurdly cautious and no longer has the stamina to throw more than a single punch at a time. He still has his handspeed, but that, literally, is it. In addition, his chin is unquestionably made of the finest crystal. Did you see the Johbnson KO, a light punch to the side of the head!

Roy Jones has been boxing with the expectation of defeat since Antonio Tarver III, when he was happy just to get through the twelve. Even against Glen Johnson you could see that Jones was delighted when he won even a round. It was sad to see.

Unless Calzaghe has suddenly leapt over the hill himself, he will embarass Jones in this fight, spending most of it all over him like a rash. Thats not the opinion of a Calzaghe fan, but a fan of boxing in general, based on the evidence of my own eyes.

Jones was great, but he isn't anymore.

Nah, after he fights Jones (40) Glen Johnson will be turning 40 as well, so I reckon he'll take that fight. I don't think there are any other 40+ year olds around the division so he'll hang 'em up after that.

Glen Johnson looked like a pushover in his fight last month against the hottest young star in the division didn't he?

Y'all must of forgot!! Yes RJJ is older, slower, but he is still bad enough to fight Joe! RJJ said in an interview he has forgotten more boxing then most will EVER know!

Can roy still fight with the style he used in his prime? NO

The most important thing to know... is that he doesnt.

Im not overrating his capabilities.. im aware of what he still CAN and CANNOT do... but some people on here ARE in fact... severely underrating him at this point...

using tarver III and glen johnson as examples of how he still fights... just isn't factual.

Calzaghe would be ****** to fight Pavlik when he could fight a much older fighter who doesn't throw many punches. I can just picture now all the scoring he will get for his ineffective slaps. I loved where he said "everyone dodged me all these year, now they all want to fight me." What a ****ing joke. He goes to the states fight 43 year old hop in an unimpressive manner, and now his ego is on par with the likes of the other prizefighters, that's all he's achieved. I will bet all my points right now the he fights Jones with a 3 to 1 ratio, slapper wants no part of Pavlik.

There is no doubt that the Roy Jones we saw against Trinidad looked better than he did during his bad days against Tarver and Johnson. However, in that fight, how often really did he mount a sustained attack? The most he seemed able to muster was five punches and then back out, and remember this is ROY JONES we're talking about. I know I said he could only throw one punch at a time, but that was an exaggeration, obviously, my gran could throw more than five punches if she had too, so of course Roy can. The problem is that more often than not it really is one punch at a time and the reason for that is that Roy can no longer sustain serious attacking intent for a twelve round boxing match. I'm sure that you will even agree with me on this.

My opinion on this fight is in no way a diss on Roy, who i think was amazing, but he has been way past it for a long time and we are still denying it to ourselves. Of course Roy looked like he had better stamina against a welterweight/middleweight like Trinidad, because Trinidad could neither push him around or hit him hard enough to sap his energy. I'm sure Trinidad was chosen for that very reason, the biggest name Roy could conceivably beat.

I stand by my opinion that Roy is going to wind up looking pretty bad against calzaghe, but believe me I wish it weren't so. I would love to see the Roy of old as much as you would, even against my own favourite Calzaghe, but I really, really don't think that Roy has it in him anymore.

You also thought Roy lost widely in Tarver 1. So clearly your opinion is either:

A. Biased

or

B. Insane.
