I always thought it was a smart move. He knew the motivation to train wasn't there anymore and that he was past his physical prime. No need to continue.

why is it pathetic. The man didn't feel at his best anymore and didn't feel like training anymore either.

Now if he had remained active and decided not to fight Vitali again, that's another thing.

yeah some people like yourself would have that mentality. But most people at that stage have a little more pride in themselves and me myself would hate that cloud hanging over my head for the rest of my life. If you go back and lose the rematch then you have every right to retire and say you can't do it anymore. But to just be scared into retirement is pathetic imo
