Smoger actually lets the FIGHTERS FIGHT! Joe Cortez on the other hand is in the middle of the fighters, yelling "cmon, break it up, break it up" every time the fighters get close. There were plenty of times during the Calzaghe/Bhop fight, where Cortez was breaking it up while they were still throwing punches on the inside, and in the process of breaking it up themselves.

Smoger is the best. Cortez and Nady are ****, a couple of egomaniacs, thinking they are bigger than the fight.

Smoger's the best ref out there. If there's gonna be a brawl he needs to be in charge. He always lets guys fight without any overzealous bull****. He don't stop fights the first time somebody gets wobbled either.

steve smoger is definetly one of the best refs in the game today. he's like the ref from the 50s lol he lets the guys bust it up to the max.

another guiy is randy newman who's actually a former heavyweight contender who fought jerry quarry and chuck wepner. he's not a flashy guy like cortez, who makes his presence known even before a fight starts lol. but i like randy he's really low key and he let's fighters do what they want.

another one i like is arthur mercante jr, may not be as good as his dad, but i havent had any problems with him so far.

all these guys should get more major assignments.

They should clone this guy and have him ref every fight. Not only is he probably the best referee in the sport, he is tough as nails, has taken chairs and punches to the head, and marches forward like a true warrior himself.

i think what makes Smoger he uses commonsense he knows that someone like Kelly Pavlik is a guy who can go down & recover and come back strong but he also knows Jermain Taylor does'nt pocess the same ability to recouperate like Pavlik

other referees might have stopped Shane Mosley when he fought Vernon Forrest cause Mosley was getting nailed with Right hands & was getting a bit of a hammering in that 3 round ,but Smoger used his commonsense & realised which fighter he was dealing with & it was good decision to give Shane the benefit of the doubt allthough he did'nt win the fight in the end

That's a really hard skill to determine if fighters can come back from an onslaught.
I mean one minute the guy sometimes looks on death's door, and then he comes on like hell on wheels.
