I think that Cotto's stock does go down if he loses to someone he wouldn't get a lick of credit for beating, am I right?

A casual fan doesn't know who Margarito is, so if Cotto wins, who cares, and if Cotto loses, he lost to a nobody.

I doubt Arum wants to sacrifice his East Coast franchise for a prospective West Coast franchise that doesn't speak English.

Agreed. Arum has got to want Cotto to win over Marg. Margarito has 5 losses and casual fans come in droves when the fighter or fighters in a fight are undefeated. Cotto knows English and is just much more marketable in every way. Cotto is Top Rank's shining star right now. Plus everywhere Cotto fights he always packs the house with puertoricans. I don't see Marg doing that at all. There's no way Bob would want Cotto to lose. He wants Cotto to keep making money for him and set up megafights with Mayweather, Hatton and more fighters in the loaded WW division.

I agree. Cotto is already a franchise, and Margarito, apart from hardcore fans, has never been much of a franchise. It wouldn't surprise me if young Julio César Chávez Jr. has already sold more Pay-Per-Views than Margarito has done in his life.

Yes, it's way too much of a leap to think that. It doesn't matter if Cotto is 1000X the offensive fighter Clottey is - which he isn't - Cotto emerging victorious in the Margarito fight is in question because of his defensive lapses and questionable chin. Anyone got the Gomez fight? Watch it again carefully. Cotto gets caught plenty of times clean. On at least one occasion Cotto's legs buckled slightly when Gomez caught him with a right hand against the ropes. Several of the times Cotto got caught he danced away. That's not always for effect, he's shaking it off. The kid is still iffy on taking punches. Watch Cotto's legs as he gets hit:

He's getting better at playing it off though, that's why Mosley for one, didn't collapse on him when he was buzzing.. Margarito collapses regardless. Horrible matchup for Cotto.

You don't get it. Cotto is going to lose. He's going to lose to someone, somehow, at some point. He'll get caught by a lucky punch even if that's all it takes, and they're running out of perfectly matched opponents for the guy. This isn't about what we think, this is about what they think. If Cotto is going to get caught - better it be one of their guys who does the job. I've already explained how lucrative this will be when Margarito wins for Top Rank Enterprises. Look into the future.. There's a storm brewing up ahead.

I think Cotto can, and I think will outbox Margarito to a decision. I don't think it's that much of a leap to think that Cotto can win comfortably. He's smart, has a good, consistent jab, is faster, knows how to use the ring, and has vicious offensive attacks. I think it'll be a tough fight and not a blowout, but I can see the point you're trying to make. All in all, I still think it'll be a tough fight for Cotto, his toughest yet, but I see him pulling away a UD.
