    Calzaghe - Lacy ref job

After watching the fight for the 100th time, I have come to the conclusion that the refereeing job was irresponsible, and borderline criminal.

A fighter should never be allowed to take a beating like Lacy received. Its especial sad now that we can truly see how that beating effected him as a fighter.

That fight should have been stopped. It was obvious there was no way for Lacy to win, and he was taking one of the worst beatings I have seen in recent times.

    Pre Calzaghe:

    Post Calzaghe:

Jeff Lacy is now a diminished fighter. I don't think he should be fighting anymore. Fighters that display such dramatic changes after a single fight end up like Meldrick Taylor.

I rewatched the fight last week and came to the same conclusion, the fight was so one sided his only chance was to land a clean shot and KO Calzaghe but in giving Lacey that minuscule chance he took too much of a beating.

    Should have been stopped.

So if you think the referee should have stopped the fight, what does that say about Lacy's corner?

Well to be fair, Jeff was insisting that his corner didn't stop it. Ironically he ended up firing his trainer anyways. But I would hope that if I were in his corner I would throw in the towel to spare him unnecessary punishment.

I agree, I would have overrode his wishes and taken control.

Especially in that case, maybe only in a case like that.

Yeah, the fight should have been stopped by the corner or the referee.

                  Call me crazy but...

I didn't see a single logical spot for the referee to stop it.

It's pretty difficult to find a good stopping point in a fight where no one punch has the guy in trouble. ESPECIALLY if the fighter who is getting his ass kicked is a murderous puncher as Lacy was feared to be.

Wasn't Herol Graham doing to Julian Jackson what Calzaghe did to Lacy up until the point of Jackson killing him with one shot?

I agree that his corner was absolutely shameless. But I have come to see Dan Birmingham as an *******, so it didn't really surprise me. However, the ref should not have let that beating continue. Even after the knockdown in the 12th when Lacy got up on unsteady legs, he still let him take another 2:30 seconds of punishment, and Joe didn't stop punishing.

I wouldn't have argued for a stoppage after Calzaghe had Lacy hurt in the 7th round, although I would not have argued with it due to the onesided domination of the fight. Round 8 Round 9 Round, there is not a round after the 7th where a stoppage cant be argued.

By the 10th round the fight should have been over no questions asked. There was no way Jeff was going to win. He just just a human punching bag at that point. Round 11 well... now it was just becoming disgraceful. Round 12. That was borderline criminal.

Why would anyone let Lacy take that punishment?

You know how bad a fight is when the Commentators are starting to suggest a stoppage.
