    this is what Bernard said....

HOPS SAID: "Whatever Joe Calzaghe throws at me in the ring, it's nothing compared with what I've faced up to and managed to overcome in life. That's why there's only one ending to this story. You know it, I know it and, deep down, so does Joe Calzaghe."

So what about what RJ, and Jermain and Segundo Mercado (dropped Hops twice) and Clinton Mitchell threw at him? I guess what THEY had was tougher than what he already experienced? I sincerely hope no one really believes all this pre fight JIBBERISH...

the point was already thrown by SCULLY but i second that....

I agree with your point. People always say people are tough because they are from the streets or they had a hard life.

Who is tougher, the guy that boxes because he has to? Or the guy that boxes because he thinks its fun?

I'd say the guy that does it because he thinks its fun.

      • i still dont understand why people think that just because a fighter came from the streets, they have this crazy ass advantaged over fighters that didnt. even more funny is that some people think that fighters who came from AMERICAN streets are the toughest in the game. we have fighters from brazil, africa, mexico, guatemala etc. explain to how american streets are worse then streets from those countries.

            lol.. NO

The guy that does it because he has to has more motivation. You don't go to work because its fun.

but if your kids gotta eat your gonna go whether you want to/fun/boring/killing you/hate it/love it or not. Because everyone EVEN YOU are gonna do what they feel they HAVE to do to survive. Unless you just don't care.

So no.. I say the guy that HAS TO is tougher...Just because he HAS TO BE for LIFE.

Germantown is one of the more peaceful and affluent neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Bill Cosby is from there as well, as was Sun Ra. White collar workers outnumber blue collar workers by about 9/2. The median income is over $40,000/ year.

Crime rates are some of the lowest in the city.

I didn't grow up in the roughest "hood" either, but even I grew up in a tougher Philly neighborhood than Hopkins did, with higher crime rates and lower median income. So I can't help but laugh when he refers to his tough background: he's a middle class kid! Sure he went to prison, but anyone can do that.

He's built a false image on being "street." But it's not him. Sorry if you thought he would be too "street" for Calzaghe or anyone else, but you have the wrong guy.

Back to Bernard regardless of where he grew up prison can make you hard. I'm sure something had to be hard about him for people to keep off of him in there. And Bernard grew up many years ago. Neighborhoods change.
aint that the truth, since i've moved from long beach, ca. a lot of neighborhoods changed and that has only been 13 years since i split. some of the very worst neighborhoods with the worst gang activity is all cleaned up and yuppy now. i guess who ever actually owned the houses found out that the property value was worth more and raised the price and moved out the poor. then they fixed and sold a lot of homes or left it for the buyer to upgrade their **** and now they have a completely different and new neighborhood.

what should be looked at is, how it was back then, not now....... that could be a world of difference, usually is.......

                • Hopkins early life is born of circumstance.
Same way he ended up a Boxer.
However it makes no difference at the end of the day if you meet a guy better than you at some stage even if he was priviliged..
Only difference is that guy was not a victim of circumstance.
And having a **** life doesn't make you any tougher.
Toughness is within whether you have had to experience using it or not.
Personally when I hear someone bleating about how bad their life is/was .....it shows weakness.

Really, so who fights harder? The guy that joins the army because he loves war, or the guy that gets drafted?

                      Nice logic.
