If he said he had a hard life maybe he was referring to other elements?? You don't have to be from the ****** to have hard life, the hardships he may have created for himself are the points he was maybe trying to make. But what kills me is that some people in America complain about how bad they have it, and claim there hood is the worst and most violent place, when they fail to realize how much worse other countries have it...

very true, other countries have it so much worse than we. amidst all the bull**** recently in this country, the high gas, foreclosures, etc.... this country is still so much better off than most others, yet we take it much to much for granted.

While Bernard was "on the streets" and "getting ****d in the pen" Joe C was winning the British Amatuer Boxing titles and making the national team...

            GO JOE C!

Germantown is one of the more peaceful and affluent neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Bill Cosby is from there as well, as was Sun Ra. White collar workers outnumber blue collar workers by about 9/2. The median income is over $40,000/ year.

Crime rates are some of the lowest in the city.

I didn't grow up in the roughest "hood" either, but even I grew up in a tougher Philly neighborhood than Hopkins did, with higher crime rates and lower median income. So I can't help but laugh when he refers to his tough background: he's a middle class kid! Sure he went to prison, but anyone can do that.

He's built a false image on being "street." But it's not him. Sorry if you thought he would be too "street" for Calzaghe or anyone else, but you have the wrong guy.

You're an idiot. If you can't look at hopkins and see he is street then you need glasses. You can hear it in the way he talks and carries himself. He's been in jail, he's been stabbed! Dude doesnt even have good grammer. IT doesnt matter where you live you can always have friends from different areas that you hang out with.

One thing I know....I don't care where u are from, it doesnt have any real bearing on your toughness IN A BOXING RING. RJ grew on a farm (I've been there) with a pond in the back yard and chickens and pigs...houses spaced apart by 75 yards of woods and grass...but Hops neighborhood and upbringing didnt help him one bit when he couldn't land solidly on RJ, did it? Also, I read an article the othe day all about Hops isnt afraid to die after all hes been through and that spells trouble for JOE C.... man, PLEASE, that is soooooo ridiculous

HOPS SAID: "Whatever Joe Calzaghe throws at me in the ring, it's nothing compared with what I've faced up to and managed to overcome in life. That's why there's only one ending to this story. You know it, I know it and, deep down, so does Joe Calzaghe."

So what about what RJ, and Jermain and Segundo Mercado (dropped Hops twice) and Clinton Mitchell threw at him? I guess what THEY had was tougher than what he already experienced? I sincerely hope no one really believes all this pre fight JIBBERISH...

I think the whole point of bernards past being brought up all the time is that he SPENT 5 YEARS in prison... the road to get to the top of the middle weight division is hard enough with out having to go through something like that. let alone losing your first fight. I respect BHOP..NOT for going to prison but what he has accomplished inspite of it.

his past is his past. he WAS stabbed and he DID go to prison..and accomplishing what he has since is AMAZING......Im a HUGE fan of his.

I was stabbed and beaten with iron bars at school which won a national award by a gang of 18 yr olds when I was 15 yrs old .
                      No ******.
To be honest I don't believe half the hype I hear about "rough" upbringings.
And you don't need to be from the ****** to qualify for one.(a rough upbringing).
