How come no one is giving Hopkins a chance?

I think the two Taylor losses stand out too much.
I can't imagine Taylor winning a single round on Calzaghe, yet he got two decisions against Hopkins.
I understand this doesn't translate into Joe beating 'Nard, but when one guy has proven all-too-beatable, the other looks invincible . . . .
Btw. Hopkins has never beaten a fighter of Joe's caliber eitherComment

Why wont Calzaghe go own in history like Trinidad and DLH will?I think the two Taylor losses stand out too much.

1. Hopkins is incredibly old
2. The most damage he does is with illegal blows
3. He throws about 3 punches a round, lands about one of them
4. He does about as much holding as John Ruiz
5. He does about as much running as Cory Spinks
6. He was never that fantastic of a fighter to begin with
7. He throws more feints than punches
8. I felt that Winky beat him in his last fight, despite Winky moving up a ton of weight to fight Hopkins
9. ...Hopkins is incredibly old
I would be incredibly dissapointed in Calzaghe if he lost.Comment

Of course they don't score for headbutts, unless it's to take a point off for fouling. The problem is the guy who gets butted cannot focus on his game without worrying about making the cut worse and getting the fight stopped. Yes, fights get stopped on cuts!
After analyzing the fight in slow motion and from different angles, I have no doubt that the butt was intentional. Winky was extremely concerned about Bernard's headbutting before the fight, and he was right about it. Emanuel Stweard said during the commentary that Bernard has a history of headbutting. He was right. Hopkins tried to headbutt Taylor too, but only managed to cut his head. Had the headbutt been more successful (over an eye) then who knows, maybe Taylor would have lost too?
For the record, I think Taylor won both of those fights and fair decisions were given.
Calzaghe was headbutted in the Bika fight. Bika had to fight dirty because he doesn't have the technical tools to beat a guy like Calzaghe legitimately. Joe ended up having to protect himself more after that headbutt and wasn't able to put his full effort into his fight.
See what I'm getting at? Headbutts can totally **** up a fighter. Ask Tyson! I seem to remember something about him being so enraged by Holyfield's butting that he bit part of Holyfield's ear off!Comment

To be honest, Calzaghe does his ONLY damaged with illegal blows...1. Hopkins is incredibly old
2. The most damage he does is with illegal blows

Joe is an impressive dude, but I ****ing hate the fact that he gets away with the slapping. It IS illegal.
Anyone who try to argue otherwise can just go watch wrestling.
I favour Hopkins to win an ugly fight, with real akward **** going on.
He just destroys any style with his ugly tactics, which makes me laugh

History is relative. In the UK Calzaghe is already widely seen as perhaps the greatest British fighter ever, at least by boxing fans, whereas no-one really cares about Trinidad and DLH.
Before you slate me and say "fighters have to be famous in the States" ask yourself why that should be? In reality it is simply a foible of fandom itself, "he can't be great unless everyone here says he is".
More thoughts on Calzaghe going down in history here:

Old Yank put it quite well over at ESB forums a few months back.

JoeDota -- You are entitled to your opinion. Calzaghe has accomplished what only he and two other fighters in the history of prize fighting have ever accomplished. I want you to go do some research on how long a champ holds a title on average. Then go research how much amateur experience the typical pro gets and what their amateur records look like. When you are done, let me know how many fighters in the history of the sport have gone 17 years (amateur into pro) without losing a fight. Let me know who the ONE and ONLY fighter in the history of the sport is, OK?
