Witter has bad management and a bad persona. If I was his manager I would have been pushing the Yorkshire angle to build a local following by having him fight in Leeds and Sheffield (not backwaters like Barnsley and Doncaster). I'd be pitting him against kids from Lancashire and looking for either a European or British title, then I'd be having him headline shows in Leeds and Manchester against southerners and going after the North angle, then once he's got a bit of a name put him on world stage undercards.

I would also stop him from calling out Hatton and I certainly wouldn't let him near a microphone while Hatton was being interviewed until he was at least holding the British title.

But that's the management side. It's also Witter's personality. By constantly playing his "poor black me" card he's succesfully alienating almost the entirety of what would be his initial fanbase in Yorkshire, and by wearing the Jamaican flag he sets himself up as a wannabe. He also commits the cardinal sin in Britain: He tries to be flash. Flash fighters are usually unpopular in Britain because we're not a flashy nation. Naseem Hamed was flash and was loathed. Eubank was intensely disliked when he was flash (while Benn was popular) and only gained in popularity when he stopped being flashy and started being eccentric. Witter attempts to be flash when he really isn't in that kind of position.

Basically Witter could have been a star (although his string of decision wins from his debut was a barrier) but he was handled incorrectly and his personality got in the way.

Witter hasnt limited his opportunities by talking about being black....... hes talking about being black because his opportunities HAVE BEEN limited..... what he means by that is opportunities have been denied to him for secondary reasons like personality or wether he is marketable to white ppl in the UK when his ability as a boxer is what should count most.

I have lived and fought from the same city as Junior Witter and live in Doncaster right now. Given the choice - fans here - love Rick - hate Witt.

Something is very wrong with that situation, especially considering that most Yorkshire people are extremely proud of the county - dare i say it - more than other county dwellers. Junior does alienate himself from the community in which he lives in - but SqueelPig....even Naz was a hero in Sheffield - as brash as he was! The community in Yorkshire is predominently white, more so than other places. 99% honkey round here. Like Hatton says - in order to make the fight pay and the risk worth it - Witter is going to have to be more popular and be more of a draw.

Junior is doing something seriously ****ing wrong. When he's on the microphone, he seems disrespectful and mean. Whilst Naz was different, he was more ****y and arrogant...however he was amusing at the same time. He was an entertainer and a character. Witter comes across as an extremely unpleasent person - especially when placed against Ricky Hatton who has his media relationship at max-power 24/7.
