I dont think that Arum picked Gomez as Cotto's next opponent, for the sole purpose of gaining Cotto more exposure. Its plain as day that Gomez is faaaar from a household name. When you think of famous boxers, i highly doubt that Gomez comes to mind.

With that said, its still a more respectable opponent for Cotto, than Forbes is for Oscar.
Thats basically how I see it to, its a setup fight. Stays busy and since they are on the same card build up the fight against Cintron/Margarito. However, Gomez's contender appearance and win over Gatti give Cotto the added value of some name recognition which is a bonus for him.

that was years ago idiot years!!!! It's a whole different world now. floyd wasnt really floyd then he was in the stages of getting to the floyd that is now. Plus floyd took on diego, castillo twice, hernandez and chavez jr all early in his career. dont act like he didnt fight anyboyd. diego had more credentials, more hype, better p4p ranking then any of cotto's opponents. Floyd fought castillo in a hard fought battle that some people say castillo won( mostly the floyd haters) so what does floyd do??? give castillo an immediate rematch and whoops that ass in more convincing fashion what did cotto do when he almost go ko'd by torres? nothing turn your back and move up in weight. and that was with torres taking the fight on very very short notice. get out of here with your bull ****. floyd is the best skilled fighter in the world. There is no fighter out there with his ability. With that said there is people in the lower ranks that arent scared of floyd and would fight him. boxers fight it's what they love doing they been doing it their whole life and all of a sudden they are scared of someone??? lmao get the **** out of here!!!!!!!

explain to me then how the average ESPN watcher will recognize Quintana or Cintron over Gomez. explain the logic cuz i fail to see it. Gomez made some noise retiring Gatti. Gomez was on a syndicated cable show and had a fight televised on ESPN and it wasnt even a FNF but a FEATURE fight. Why would ESPN do that? The goal of choosing Gomez is in HOPES that those who were REMOTELY interested in The Contender or Gomez would be interested in Gomez/Cotto and then eventually Cotto/Margarito. It makes perfect sense/cents. Now answer this HONESTLY, you are a pretty straight up dude,

If you were Cotto's manager and were looking for a tune up for Cotto, would you go for some dude who has come out on undercards once or twice or would you choose a guy who had network cable exposure and even his own headlining fight on that network?

Alfonso Gomez wasnt even the most popular fighter on the first contender series, People like Manfredo/Ishe smith and the winner sergio mora were more well-known than Gomez IMHO..I just think he is a safe stay busy fight for Cotto for the moment while the others sort themselves out.

Exactly. This was all pre-2002. Since then, the only fight that i give him credit for is Judah. Even though Judah was coming off of a loss, he was still a big threat to Floyd. Baldomir was a joke. Oscar isn't even a dedicated boxer anymore. I thought (or should i say "hoped) Hatton would've been more of a challenge, but his inability to deal with a C-class fighter in Luis Collazo, showed that Hatton is not suitable for 147. I have nothing but praise for Floyd when he was in the lower weight classes, but since 2002, he hasnt done anything overly extrodinary for him to have the praise that some of his fanboys give him.
