This is old news.... this supposedly offer isn't of late it was ages ago. It may of been witters biggest pay day at the time but i guarantee it would of been an absolute insult.
When negotiating a fight with a fighter who is low reward high risk, it's a known tactic to offer just over the fighters biggest pay day knowing fine well the fighter deserves more than this, which in turn the fighter will refuse and then the other fighters team cannot be accused of ducking....
Think about it... You (Witter) are currently fighting your competition at £50,000 - £60,000 a fight, your trying to get a big named fighter (hatton) into the ring, who is avoiding you. The big named fighters team offer you £82,000 (15%) but there set to make £550,000 from the fight. (remember this isn't your personal "take home" money, as you have to pay managers who automatically takes 20%, training team & tax etc) would you take on the big named fighter for an increase in maybe £5000 max in your "take home" money? - (these are not actual figures)
The 30% what is being talked about is a recent offer coming from Witter, who as the WBC champion is actually entitled up to 70%...
The Hatton camp needs to keep their faithful football crowd following, so team hatton goes to the "manchester evening news" and talks about old news!
Hattons team will be aware of the fuss thats being kicked up lately on the internet forums in the local gyms pub etc about him avoiding Witter so they have to release something to the press to keep their star safe... at the end of the day its business, and hatton is their cash cow.
Its just the same when a fighter gives up a belt, to avoid the low reward high risk fight (as in the FMJ judah rematch situation).
Obviously true boxing fans will be aware of this, and won't read into what Ray Hatton is saying to the M.E.N... As at the end of the day, Hatton can fight whoever he feels at this moment in time so why wouldn't you shut up your long time rival??? - even if he has been calling you!!!

Too many fans are talking from a business point of view when looking at possible match-ups. Why should any fan give a ****e what fight makes the most sense or how much they are getting paid. All we should be thinking about is seeing the best fight the best or what is the best fight and who are the best fighters. We need to see these two fight because they may very well be the best two at this weight. The only way we will ever truly know is when they fight.
I can understand Hatton taking one or even two fights to get back his confidence and get back to winning but he should also first get rid of any threat to his title as the best at 140 in his own country then move onto the bigger market in America again to take care of the guys there. I see this fight as being his biggest threat, therefore, as a fan of boxing this is the fight I want to see most at 140. Of course, Malignaggi is also a good fight and I wouldn't mind seeing that one either.Last edited by BennyST; 02-28-2008, 05:14 AM.

"We offered Junior Witter his highest purse he'd ever had," said Ray Hatton. "If someone offered Ricky that, I'd be insulted. But as far as Junior Witter was concerned, it was his biggest purse. It is unfortunate, but you are getting a fighter who has not captured the public's imagination. Most others would say they could live with what we offered. He can't say this, that and the other and then refuse the offer. We've taken that back now. It's gone. Now he wants 30 percent of everything that comes with a Ricky Hatton fight?"
Witter should have taken the offer and since he was so sure of victory that he was willing to fight a "winner take all." Junior would have made all the money he could ever wanted by beating a living legend like Hatton, in the rematch, they could've even had a "double or nothing clause."
Now Hatton is locked up for three fights with HBO, first Lazcano and then Malinaggi at MSG. HBO is not interested in having two Euro fighters face each other after how poorly Calzaghe/Kessler did in America ratings wise.
