Wow!! I'm almost halfway through it now, and I'm wondering, why was the United States government so f***ed up to Joe Louis??? THEY TAXED THE MAN 90% of his income, such greed and it's so disgusting how society could be so unhuman to a man so great. It's not like Joe Louis got such in debt from partying like most stars do, but he did things like pay for his fellow soldiers buses, etc. Such a sad story, all he ever tried to do was good, joining the Army, etc. And all he got was **** for it. Even from Muhammad Ali! It's a damn shame.

Schmeling wasn't a ****, the guy in the document (who said something like "America helped a **** to become a millionaire but taxed Joe Louis millions of dollars") just wanted to make Schmeling look like one to make it more dramatic.

Don't let facts get in the way of a good story.

I noticed that - misleading, if not inaccurate. And they didn't have to skew things to praise Louis, either...

I've always known about the speculation surrounding Louis' death(involvement with the mafia, and drug-dealers, etc). I was glad to see that HBO didn't add any of that to the documentary. Kudos.

On the other hand, I never knew that Schmeling got the soda endorsement and became super rich off of it. While the African-American man was left with nothing, after supporting his country in war and in the ring.

You'd think that the white powers that be(Owners of Coca Cola) back then, would have had the decency to offer the opportunity to Louis but, no they gave it to an Enemy of the State, in Schmeling. We were at war with Germany and they put money in a German mans pocket simply because he was white. Un-fcking believable!!! I almost fell out of my bed listening to that **** last night!!!!

And people wonder why African-Americans are angry. **** like this is why. Louis deserved to be treated fairly by his country and they ****ted on him, like they've ****ted on African-Amercans for centuries. Dam shame.

I liked the Liston one better.

This Louis was well-done, but it really didn't tell me anything new or unexpected.

I also liked the Liston doc better because I learned more about that person. Also I thought the fight clips on the Louis special were too sparse. It was a lot more about Louis the man instead of Louis the fighter.

Yeah I was curious to see if they would mention this as well. I saw that in one of the deleted scenes of American Gangster that Lucas gave Joe $50,000 to pay toward his tax debt, I wonder if its true?
