Schmeling's trainer was ***ish. I actually feel that Max Schmeling is a tragic character as well.. he was basically used and thrown away like a utensil for the **** regime.

It was, but Max's late life had a much happier ending than Louis.

Max got rich from the soda endorsements and lived to nearly 100.

I knew about the age.. but I never heard about the soda endorsements. Although I assume he was already wealthy.

Yea he wasnt a ****. But he did more then just dine with Hitler and was to the German war effort what Louis was the American war effort.

He did help some ***s escape the ****s though, and hid a few ***ish friends in his home.

Yea if u watch HBO's 2005 year in review, they show a bunch of fighters that died that year and Max was one of them

Unbelievable. Nobody lives to 100, especially not fighters!

I think Jacobs was Joe's manager, but you may be right about the trainer not being ***sh.

I've always known about the speculation surrounding Louis' death(involvement with the mafia, and drug-dealers, etc). I was glad to see that HBO didn't add any of that to the documentary. Kudos.

On the other hand, I never knew that Schmeling got the soda endorsement and became super rich off of it. While the African-American man was left with nothing, after supporting his country in war and in the ring.

You'd think that the white powers that be(Owners of Coca Cola) back then, would have had the decency to offer the opportunity to Louis but, no they gave it to an Enemy of the State, in Schmeling. We were at war with Germany and they put money in a German mans pocket simply because he was white. Un-fcking believable!!! I almost fell out of my bed listening to that **** last night!!!!

And people wonder why African-Americans are angry. **** like this is why. Louis deserved to be treated fairly by his country and they ****ted on him, like they've ****ted on African-Amercans for centuries. Dam shame.

All men are created equal? Not in America
