Better opponent, Alfonso Gomez or Josh Clottey?

Lets take an in depth look. Ive been home sick all week so i have lots of time.

Alfonso Gomez is 18-3 (8 KOs). His only losses are to Ishe Smith, Jesse Feliciano, and Peter Manfredo. He only fought a four rounder against Smith in what was just his 2nd pro fight and he was deducted a point. Its very hard to win a 4 rounder when you are deducted a point. It would have been a draw or a Gomez win had the point not been deducted. Then he lost to Feliciano, whom he also beat and had a draw with. The same Feliciano who gave Kermit Cintron hell in his last fight. As far as the Manfredo loss, Gomez went toe to toe with a Super Middleweight and went 1-1 against him. Gomez has recently picked up some good wins against Arturo Gatti and Be Tackie. I dont know about you guys, but I was shocked when he did that to Gatti. I know Gatti was over the hill, but I just thought well here is an easy win for Gatti before he leaves the sport. Then he destroyed Gatti in impressive fashion. I think Gomez is a better fighter than people give him credit for.

Joshua Clottey is 33-2 (19 KOs). His only 2 losses were against Margarito and Carlos Baldomir. Against Margarito he was doing very well until he injured his hand and couldnt fight effectively anymore. Against Baldomir we was doing very well also but was DQd for fighting with his head. Clottey had a very good win over Diedo Corrales, but Chico was jumping up 2 weight classes and coming off back to back losses. I pretty much knew the outcome of that fight before it happened. Since then Clottey has won two lackluster fights against Flores and Alvarez.

I would say as far as their resumes go, they are about even, probably a slight edge for Clottey. You could argue an edge for either fighter I guess.

While Clottey has been winning lackluster fights, Gomez has been winning exciting fights.

Gomez has a much larger fan base than does Clottey. Gomez is the bigger name.

I think that Alfonso Gomez is a decent opponent for Miguel Cotto. Especially to set up a possible Margarito bout. Gomez has a pretty big name, and the Puerto Rican-Mexican rivalry will already start before Cotto-Margarito.

I just feel people would settle for a Cotto-Clottey fight, but bash Cotto for fighting Gomez. I think Gomez is a better fight to take at the moment than would be a Clottey fight. I consider Gomez and Clottey about even based on their accomplishments, and Gomez is the bigger name, and probably the easier fight, im not going to lie.

Clottey and by a bit......I mean they are two totally different fighters but I think Clottey is highly underrated and one of the best WW out there. He would have beaten Margarito had he not borken his hand that night.

Clottey is the better of the 2. I've always liked Clottey. I feel he his underrated. He has very good power and defense.

How do you think Clottey would beat him? What does he bring to the table. He is stationary, being stationary against Cotto is a disaster waiting to happen.

As far as people saying Clottey hits hard, he really doesnt. His shots look hard, but dont have much an effect. He hasnt even scored a KO in 5 years and that including a fight against a washed up lightweight at 147.

Gomez power is probably underrated while Clotteys is overrated. They are probably about even in my opinion.

honestly, clottey cant beat any of the top welters.......he ALWAYS gasses out and gives up like 4 of the last 5.....its very difficult to win decisions like that.....

              anyway....

gomez got robbed vs feliciano in the second fight.....he should've won that fight by at least 3 points...i also thought he edged out the 3rd feliciano fight but jesse made it very close....and feliciano has not looked bad at all since beating phillips...

and the smith fight was pretty much a clear cut draw if the referee hadnt deducted alfonso a point with no warning at all....

so when you think about it gomez only has one loss against a super middlewight...we ahvent seen the full fight,though....sergio mora thought alfonso won but i think alfonso accepts that decision as correct...

i think clottey is more gifted...but i dont think theres any danger against him, if he hurts you, he doesnt follow up. he lands cleaner punches but lets himself get outworked, he gives up rounds on activity alone...

gomez at least will try to win.....

gomez brings a larger fan base, which translates into more money, and although i'm a fan of gomez, i think that cotto would really do a number on him, mainly for the fact that cotto is a bigger guy and is a beast inside the ring. gomez gets hit too much to really give cotto a hard time. i like gomez, i think he is a class act and i think that he can and will have a solid career, but fighting cotto right now, logically, will be a loss, who knows, gomez could upset cotto, anything can happen in boxing, but that is a tall order. either way it would be exciting for as long as it lasted.

now for clottey. clottey is dangerous and i think he can beat anyone at welterweight, providing his hands hold up. i think that he can beat cotto, do i think he will? no, cotto has proven that he has the goods to be a winner, and knows how to change up his game, i think cotto is more versatile then people give him credit for. clottey vs cotto is a good fight, but i think the risk reward fighting clottey isnt anything worth taking the risk. if i were cotto or his team i would wait a bit until clottey is more in demand, at least a mandatory or a world title holder. clottey has next to nothing as far as a fan base is concerned, at least on the grand scheme of things. gomez holds the edge against clottey when it comes to selling the fight.

both gomez and clottey vs cotto are and would be good fights to watch, exciting fights to watch, for as long as they lasted. but the bottom line right now with these fights when it comes to making money, gomez would be the better of the two...................gomez equals more money............

good points. This is why im saying Gomez is not as bad of an opponent as people like to say. I think the fact that he was on the Contender makes people not take his that serious. I still think Cotto is too much for him though. I notived you got some bets on Gomez, wanna bet?

Im as much of a Cotto fan as u are, but lets not make Gomez out to be some wrecking machine now. I would much rather see Cotto fight Clottey.
