I'm not quite sure the distinction is as Black and White as you make it but if you had Roberto Duran at one end of the spectrum and Sugary Ray Robinson at the other I think you'd find Joe would slot in a lot closer to Robinson.

He may not box textbook style, but neither do people like Roy Jones or Eubank. Are they just FIGHTERS?

Stop saying he could easily outbox so-and-so. Could he outfight so-and-so? Absolutely. Calzaghe has extremely fast hands and throws tons of combinations.

But he's not a particularly good boxer. In fact, i've rarely seen him box an opponent at the elite level. he picks his spots to fight but he rarely actually steps back and works off a jab.

He hardly ever even uses a jab.
This is so wrong i dont know where to start. Just a complete nonsense post.

Calzaghe virtually always boxes opponents unless he dominates them on the inside. He gets involved in some scraps but always sets up his work with jabs and footwork and moves in and out of range.

watch. If hopkins is smart he will try to fight backing Calzaghe up and Calzaghe will not be effective. Because he cannot box. It looks like he's boxing but he's not. He's just picking his spots to throw so many punches at a time. Its extremely effective, but its not boxing

Joe Calzaghe is a great boxer.

And he DOES work of his jab. Notice how often he will throw a jab to the head then immediately follow it with a jab to the body. He often uses this to start combinations.

Man, are you being serious or just trying to wind people up?

Joe can fight going backwards, you don't see it that often because his footwork allows him to turn defence into offence.

Calzaghe throws loads of jabs. He has jabbed the bollocks out of countless opponents.

He is a counter puncher though. Which is why, the Nard fight will be heroically boring.

Joe would look like a God in the ring with Pavlik.

Also I don't know where the thread starter got the idea that Joe can't fight going backwards. Joe is best against anyone coming onto him.

I agree, Calzaghe is great at slipping the first three punches you throw at him and countering with 6 of his own.

I guess slipping and blocking Kessler's jabs and straights and then hitting him with your own jabs and combinations isn't called boxing anymore.

Calzaghe can brawl but he can box too.
