THE RING: "Our pound-for-pound list is based entirely on opinion"

Exactly... and that is why it is nice to have.
For the people who aren't able to objectively analyze the accomplishments of their fighter, they can look at The Ring's list (which is supposed to be a group of objective, neutral people who have extensive knowledge of the sport) and see whether Hopkins is better than Pacquiao.
Especially when comparing fights for legacy.
Hopkins beating the #1 middleweight at the time that he was doing his middleweight reign thing would be the same thing as Mayweather beating #1 Diego Corrales (sorry, it's the only example I have off the top of my head). But because of the P4P rankings... we know that say, Robert Allen (because he probably was #1 at one point) is not nearly as good as P4P #5 ranked Diego Corrales.
That's why I find it as a nice tool to examine with.Comment

did you just barely figure this out? p4p #1 is actually quite an achievement if you think about it though, to have the vast majority of people agree that you are the most skilled boxer at any point in time is something to be proud of. It is just something nice to talk about and compare match-ups that will never happen.April 2008 edition, page 137.
Exactly what I've always said. Too many punk kids on here talk about this mythical "P4P" as if the rankings are somehow set in stone, or it's an achievement earned in the ring, etc.
The entire CONCEPT of "P4P" is a HYPOTHETICAL one. It goes like this: "if all the fighters in the world were the same weight, who would win?"
Now, no one can KNOW that. Not unless they put Wlad in a shrinking chamber or put Floyd in a grow bag. It's just for FUN. And before any Floyd fans start, I'm not suggesting he's not P4P No.1 (as if would dare
) it's the entire concept, like people arguing that Winky should be higher than Calzaghe because he's fought more proven competition (FFS, it ain't based on divisional rankings... if The Blow and Winky were the same weight, who do you think would win? Simple).
Basically, if you take "P4P" really seriously (a bunch of bored journalists each vote, and often get proved wrong, as when Sugar Shane, Roy and Bernard suddenly WEREN'T the No.1 overnight) then you're a ****sexual with AIDS. Fact.Comment

I have never agreed with The Ring's version of the pound for pound rankings simply because the Ring is/was run by Bert Sugar who thinks Roy Jones > Floyd Mayweather. His opinion basically means nothing. As long as I've watched boxing, Roy was pound for pound #1, then Hopkins after Roy was dethroned by Tarver, and now it's Floyd since Hopkins was dethroned by Taylor. Floyd is the man until he loses or officially retires, simple as that.Comment
