    A fighters chin being exposed.

I hear this all the time... Every fighter has a rock solid chin, until there knocked down... THEN, there chin has been exposed... what the hell is that?

I think theres two different types of fighters, ones who have gotten hit with a punch hard enough to knock them down... and ones who havent.

Obviously some fighters can take a harder hit than others. I understand this. Im sure Carlos Baldomir can take a harder punch than the late Diego Corrales, even with the weight differential.

Take Sam Peter for instance, all the sudden his chin has been exposed? Just because hes been knocked down, he cant take a punch now?

Or like Carlos Baldomir... Were almost made to believe there isnt a welterweight out there who can put him on the canvas. Or is it, he just hasnt been hit with one of those perfect shots yet.

Everyones human... if you get hit on the right spot, right on the jaw line, with the right power... its almost like a short circuit... its doesnt really matter how much heart you have, it literally will short circuit your legs... I think theres those fighters who HAVE been hit like that, and those that haven't.

Cotto comes to mind in this particular subject for me. Hes shown he can definitely take a punch, from Zab Judah, and Shane Mosley.. two hard hitting WW's, but has been on the canvas before... does that mean he has a glass chin? or that he was just hit with one of those perfect punches.

I think everyone has a "glass" chin to a certain extent... They just haven't been hit right yet. Your take?

Side Note to those that know me: This wasnt based on Roy... it was based on the below comment.

Some dudes do just have a harder head. Take Gatti for example. He took some devastating shots to the head where I expected him to fall and he just stood there waiting for the next hard shot to land flush on his chin.

Floyd comes to mind with me in comparison to Roy. I thought Roy would go down as undefeated (not counting the DQ) and all the sudden he caught a couple and his chin was "exposed".

I've always thought the knockout punch was a "lucky" punch, everyone at the professional level has one, but to be able to land it at the right time in the right place is a different story. How many guys have had a devastating knockout punch in their arsenal only to lose a fight on the scorecards?

ROFLLLLL, I agree with the OP but was thinking the same damn thing. Sure a perfect shot can take down anyone but there are guys who go down with LESS than perfect shots and we call those guys chinny.

This might turn into a Roy bashing thread.

Good obseravtions. The quality of a fighters chin is often exaggerated, one way or the other. That is the nauture of boxing fans. Sam Peter goes from an iron jaw to a glass jaw, based mostly on about 3 minutes of action. Obviously some fighters take a punch well while others don't at all, but mostly it is a gray area in between depending on many different factors.

I realize that but... it seems really easy for people who once loved Roy to flame him now. I think he's one of the all time greats.
