Watching UFC 75 leads me to believe...

First time I've entered a boxing v. MMA thread. I don't follow MMA, but I do catch an occasional match. I watched a replay of GSP v. Hughes (2nd fight) the other night and I have to say that I was pretty impressed with GSP's punching. He demonstrated a very good jab, a good guard and threw his right hand very well. He dominated Hughes largely due to his superiority as a striker IMO. I admit that I probably don't understand the complexity of the MMA fight game, but it seems to me that any MMA fighter would want to do his best to sharpen his boxing skills if he wants to be effective on his feet. I just don't see how throwing loopy off-balance punches protects you better from kicks, knees, etc as some poster suggested. I've seen a lot of these guys helplessly paw at the air and then get whacked solid by the most ridiculously telegraphed shot. I understand that there is far more to MMA than striking, but that kind of **** makes me doubt the experience level of many of the guys participating in this sport.Comment

You just answered your own question^^
Matt Hughes is known for his wrestling ability not his striking ability. What helped GSP to win his fight was his ability to neutralize Matt Hughes take down. His wrestling helped him way more than his striking abilities.
Same thing can be said about pure strikers that goes in MMA. Grapplers will '' doubt the experience level of many of the guys participating in this sport''- like you said.Comment

The UFC was regulated by the Nevada State Athletic Commision, they did not "take" the rules and regulations you mentioned, it was put upon them. And boxing did not lay the foundation for MMA, acutally, of all the martial arts, boxing is probably the least influential. And I would have to say, being a former high school and college wrestler myself, MMA fighters may very well be overall better conditioned than boxers. I've also done some boxing as a youth, but then again, they are a different type of conditioning; one gets no resolve in comparing the two. UFC fighters only call out boxers and vice versa for publicity and promotion and the possibility of luring them into thier own sport for a payday. If you fall into the hype so emotionally as you seem to be, you're being fooled by the "business" aspect of both sports. The only reason why theres a rivalry in the first place is because ufc fighters started running their mouths about how they are all around better athletes, were better conditioned and fought in a much rougher sport. Acting like boxers are one dimensional, like Floyd would really try to use the philly shell in a street fight, c'mon. The sport of boxing should have been dead by now by what UFC experts were saying, after all the UFC was killing boxing off right?
Everyone knows that boxing is doing boxing harm and not anything else, but lemme ask you this..who started comparing who?
I do agree that they are like apples and oranges in a way but they are still fight sports none the less and in many aspects boxing laid the foundation for ufc. How you gonna take the rounds, the scorecards, the corners, the weight classes, one minute brakes, etc as well as other aspects from one sport then completely diss it?Comment

Comparing the two sports is immature and a waste of time, Boxers will do better against MMAists in boxing matches and MMAists will lay it down against Boxers in MMA. Two seperate sports.Comment
