The reason Mayweather opted for the buyout rather than waiting for the May 6 result was because the contract had a limited window for the buyout, one that expired before the De La Hoya fight. However, Arum said he would have extended the window if Mayweather had asked. What Arum wouldn't do, he said, was raise the guarantees for other fights outlined in the contract.

Arum said while Mayweather would have taken the $8 million to fight Margarito, he asked for a $10 million guarantee to fight opponents such as Miguel Cotto and Ricky Hatton, when Arum was only willing to guarantee $7 million.

Arum said Mayweather also asked for $20 million to fight De La Hoya, a fight Arum said he wasn't interested in participating in.

"That's not in the cards," Arum said. "He wants $20 million for the De La Hoya fight? It's not there. Sometimes, my man, you gotta know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em. We'll talk about things down the road."

Ellerbe said Mayweather opted for the buyout so he could be "more in control of when and who he fights next. It's as simple as that. There is nothing bad between Floyd and Bob
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is a quote from Bob Arum...Didnt Mayweather make more than what he wanted in both fights? Even though arum said the money isnt there..If i was Cotto i would leave Arum now..Promoters are pricks

Margarito is a tough contender but not a person that could beat an elite.

He depends alot on his physical body which means that he wont be going up in weight any time sooner.
Whether he can beat them or not remains to be seen and will be determined in the ring not on paper or a message board. That's why fighters fight the fights to show who is the best. Having more fans and supporters say you are the best doesn't necessarily make it so.

Floyd turned down the Margarito offer to fight Mitchell, because he had every intention of beating at the time, a very, very hot commodity in Zab Judah. He was fresh off the biggest win of his career, and the undisputed WW champion of the world.

If you compare the styles of Mitchell and Judah, the answer is pretty ****ing obvious.

        Judah - Southpaw
        Mitchell - Southpaw
        Judah - Slick counter-puncher
        Mitchell - Slick counter-puncher
        Judah - Fast hands
        Mitchell - Fast hands

Could you imagine the amount of hate Floyd would of received for fighting Antonio Margarito (mind you, this was before the Margarito hype) instead of a pre Baldomir Judah? Late 2005, Early 2006, there was a consensus in the boxing public that Judah WAS the man to beat Floyd. He was supposedly faster, stronger and bigger with all the same skillsets, not to mention, a southpaw.

        The rest is history.

I seem to remember everybody saying Judah was the guy to beat Mayweather, Tricky..southpaw..fasthands etc but he lost alot of momentum when he lost to baldomir and kill some of the fight hype.

            Exactly.

The Baldomir fight was Judah's "look good fight before the real fight". He lost, which is when the Margarito hype started. And then got out of control after Floyd beat Judah.

Losing in quick KO fashion when he was fit to continue is hardly something to point at and declare him some sort of a bum. When Lewis got KO'd by Rahman I don't think everybody was about to call Lewis a bum of a fighter. And then looking to present day in Cotto-Zab you can see it clearly wasn't the case.

Granted, Lewis obviously had a better career than Zab did up to that point, but Zab's potential was obvious to everybody.
