  • Calzaghe/Kessler does lowest ratings ever for HBO

From Thomas Hauser's recent article on SecondsOut:

"By way of example; the network poured a $3,000,000 license fee plus another seven figures for marketing and production into Joe Calzaghe versus Mikkel Kessler, which garnered a 2.8 rating (the lowest prime-time HBO World Championship Boxing rating ever). But that shouldn’t have surprised anyone. The live afternoon telecast of Calzaghe against Peter Manfredo earlier in the year came in at 1.4"

I think Joe & Frank need to have their heads checked if they think they can dictate terms with Bernard, Roy or any other top flight American.

Yeah no ****. Calzaghe has to realize he has accomplished little in his career by staying undefeated. That's like Ohio State boasting about having only one loss in football this year where every team sucks. They only played one respectable team and beat them easily. Does that make them a great team? Hell no. If you fight bums for 10 years and then a few good fighters at the very end of it, you're still a nobody in terms of popularity and still very much so in terms of legacy. He has to beat bigger names or boxing is going to forget about him.

Guess this says alot about Calzaghe's place among the top names. Not in boxing ability but in name recognition.

what you talking about, Joe is the real deal. Hes beat Bika, Manfredo and Lacy, and then he stepped up and fought Kessler who beat Andrade. He can sell out whole stadiums, hes the best, just playing dude is a joke, and if not him definately his promoter. He literally should be happy hes even being offered a PPV fight.

He looked terrific against Kessler, but why waste your career fighting nobodies if you're confident you can beat the best? Everybody takes a paycut to prove it that first time, then THEY get to be in the driver's seat. Why hasn't Calzaghe tried to prove it in 10 years?

I guess HBO will not want to be part of any other Calzaghe fights in the future, HBO lost money on this fight and I'm pretty sure their not happy.

WOW! This is exactly what I mean by overemphasizing live gate as any indication of who is and isn't a draw. Certainly he has no bargaining chips with any of the marquee fighters out here which makes his excuses not to fight Hopkins all the more ridiculous.

I am not surprised. I always said Calzaghe couldn't draw flies outside of Wales and this proved it.

                    Wow that's a shame.

Oh well, just proves that he isn't a big draw as we thought...in america.
