i think what threadstarter is trying to say is that for the fight to be exciting, the fighters dont have to come out swinging wildly untill a lucky punch can be landed. an exciting fight can be made by fighters who box AND take risks. just look at the Marquez/Pacquiao fight or the Marquez/Vazquez fights. are you really going to sit there on your computer and claim that these fights were all out skill-less slugwars without any drop of boxing present? of course not. this notion that only unskilled fighters brawl is one of the most ignorant cliches on this forum. you seem to forget Hearns and Hagler and even Ali. They ALL displayed great boxing ability with power and pride.

"The point of Boxing is to hit and not to get hit"

Sure. If your content with that. If I just wanted to see strategical moves made with little or harmless damage, I'd watch my grandpa and my uncle play chess.

"But the fighter doesn't have to fight for the fans because he fights for himself. He shouldn't have to take risks just to please the fans"

Really? Why is the fighter even fighting on TV then? How is it that he's being paid for the fight? I know not ONE sport where it is able to operate without fans. This is not to say that the fighter NEEDS to go all out to please the fan but there should always be a comprimise. There is always a way to provide an exciting fight without having to comprimise your game plan. Ali did it. He could have danced his way to victory in all of his fights without getting hit, but he wanted to show that he was worth the money he was paid and he is remembered for that. Leonard did it as well and we all know he had the boxing ability to steer clear from danger.

no one remembers the technical boxing matches because there boring. no one remembers any fights of willie pep because he is a boring fighter. gatti is a bum but he is a true warrior and he will be remembered for the great action fights. cory spinks is a better fighter than gatti but no one will remember him because he had pillows for fists and he ran like a coward. boxing is all about the knockouts and the fans on boxing scene should respect the true warriors who may not have the best record or the most belts but they are peoples champions giving the fans excitement and knockouts.
You don't understand nothing about boxing.

keep watching the cowards run from each other. i dont see how anyone can respect someone like mayweather who ran in fear from baldomir who had no power and was slow as hell. i would rather watch 2 bums go toe to toe then to see a world champion run like a chicken.

dont know what fights youve seen but the ones ive seen, Ali engaged as much as he danced. some fighters today just dance and engage here and there tapping at their opponents.

                  Excellent post.

Boxing at it's core is the purest form of combat. Combat is a struggle to defeat an enemy. An enemy deserves no mercy. Therefor, the object of boxing is to dispatch the enemy with extreme prejudice.

                  Pretty simple to me!

I don’t think there is anything wrong with liking to see knockouts. I like knockouts as well as they are exciting and fun to watch. Besides, I would never tell anybody what particular aspect about a sport they should or should enjoy. That is your business. In any case boxing, like any sport at the professional level, is more about entertainment than anything else. So because of that fact I say to each their own…

But at the same time if seeing a knockout is all you watch boxing for then I would suggest that you don’t truly love this sport and are probably not a hard-core fan.* I’m not saying that as a derogatory condemnation (you can be any type of fan you damn-well please), but I do believe that to be the case.

                      * A personal example having to do with myself would be basketball. I consider myself a fan and follow the game but the aspect I really only care about are the high-flying moves and dunks. Everything else about basketball tends to bore me. So while I consider myself a fan of the sport I also realize that I am not a "hard core" fan as I can't really appreciate all the other aspects that the game has to offer like other fans are able to do.
