I think it has to, to a point. The more people like you and depend on you, the more pressure one might feel to train harder and not quit. If you aren't very liked and not even your mom likes you, you would probably fight for yourself all the time and lets face it, people have low self standards.

It could work as a disadvantage also, Floyd Patterson said that during a staredown his opponent smiled at him , i don't remember if he knocked him out but it killed his agression.
